50.5mph off road, luton! with witnesses,I kept it on my computer for ages, then bike went to Marshalls WGC and they thought it'd be funny to wipe my speedo clean, i was a bit upset at the time, but can laugh about it now, a little bit.

47.5mph, on a slick tyred mountain bike, carrying 40kg of luggage on my front and rear panniers, down the Lindis Pass, NZ.

Suddenly dawned on me as I took the racing line (down the centre stripe) that I couldn't see all the way round the corner, so slowed up a bit.

I should say, that there's a road near me on the border woth County Durham where the minerals in the ground always screw the magnetic sensor up, so apprently I've done well over 200mph 🙂

I don't know why people always cry bullshit whenever high speeds come up - I'd say most of what's been quoted in this thread is believable, give or take a bit for speedo calibration. Given a suitable straightish smooth road hill with good visibility a bike will pick up silly speed - no skill or ability involved, just balls, confidence in the machinery and madness. I'm no superhero, but my wife and I used to regularly go over 50mph on our tandem (down Pork Hill towards Tavistock if anybody knows it), and hit 60 a few times - not saying it was entirely sensible (we don't do it now we're responsible parents) but it happened. It's very rare that I don't go over 40mph on my way to work, and sometimes 50 in the summer if it's dry and sheep-free - not for long, but it's a fact that bikes go bloody fast down a hill if you let them. Keeping that sort of speed up for any length of time is pretty dangerous though with the stopping distance of a bike - anything over 35mph for me is strictly short bursts in very clear conditions.

42mph on slicked up MTB down Battery Hill Hastings. Ran out of gears big time.
50 should be easy on a road bike.
Reminds me of that bit in Psychomania :-
Chief greaser -What's the fastest you've ever been?
Greasers-90-95
Cg-Well today we go for the ton.
(gasps all round)
Greasers-But that's suicide.
Cg-So what if it is.

700mph seems a little convenient, how can you be sure it wasn't 696.5mph?

48.6mph 700c x 32 tyres down some road in n yorks - following a mate who is always faster than me - normally back off at about 40mph cos i'm a wimp and a mate hit a car that pulled out of a drive on him when he was doing 50+ and he can't straighten his fingers

I went 700mph last night on some gnarly root infested singletrack in the dark on a long travel Brompton
possibly a mistaken claim need to set correctly for them little wheels so probably more like 400mph

I wouldn't believe any max speed value off a GPS like a Garmin, it would just take one fix to be 15m out one way and the next 10m out the other way for a very high value to be given. Garmins are not precision kit!

yeah just reading about that on the garmin forums, there seems to be various ways it switches between the gps and sensor inputs depending on the strength of the fix and the model of GPS. I'd guess average speeds are accurate but I'd still be very wary of a single max speed reading, especially if it has been flicking between modes.

H'mm believable on a straight road, tucked right in and a huge ring to spin, wind with you etc.. Watched the vid and thought no way! Chap in front isnt even in a tuck position?

Fastest point I could see was where you "wahoo"! Given that hazard lines on a road over 40mph are 9mtrs apart (6mtr line, 3mtr gap), I measured it at 50mph - 80kmph (which almost ties in with your 77KMPH) 8)

a quick measure on anquet map say a fraction under 2.5 miles from top of kirkstone to brotherwater pub - now i can't see the guy passing the pub so starting to descend at 1min 20sec and the vid ending at 5mins gives 3min 40 - easy math says 1min = 60mph so should see pass brotherswater - i might have missed it - like i'm glad he missses the car at 2min 10 as he passes another cyclist!
still pretty awesome fun

edit so wrong average versus max 41mph av giving benefit of doubt on distance

As superfli says above, that's KPH. I've had 56mph down Kirkstone on a road bike and I was slipstreaming a tandem to get it. Just from experience, you're doing about 45-50mph there.

People always over-estimate both speed and distance when riding.

57mph on a mountain bike down the quantocks on tarmac bloody scary, 47 mph offroad again at the quantocks and the track promptly came to a dead end over a crest on dewey grass so brake didn't do much at that speed, probably the biggest crash i ever had and walked away.

37.5mph on a hardtail on minor roads, didn't know what I was doing at the time so I'll be happy if I break 40 on the next run round the same route.

77.1 MPH - - Kirkstone pass
All I can say is that the ODO showed 77MPH, but remember that this is an MXS ie point maximum, certainly not an average which will always be lower. Im seeing the fastest section in the top 1/3 of the hill

Hope to hit a recorded 50MPH this season and I'm sure it will come with time. There was a great descent on the Tour of Pembrokeshire last season which would have been perfect. Too many bends or poor quality surfaces on the descents around Mid Wales to really hit those speeds though.

You could try the descent coming towards Mach from Dylife. With a tailwind that is really fast and also easy to see ahead. Or if you come further south, then the descent from the Epynt to Trecastle. It is a double single carriageway (if that makes sense?) so you can be pretty sure nothing will come the other way.

Fastest I've hit was 55mph, but that was on a speedo and I don't think it was 100% accurate but it did feel quick. That was coming down the Bwlch in S.Wales.
Often get over 50mph, but would love to see 62mph (100kph). Didn't even manage it on the Galibier during the Etape on closed roads despite going pretty balls out. Lack of weight and lack of tailwind probably didn't help.

Dubious of that video actually being 77mph. The guy in front isn't even tucked and is wearing a camelbak. Must be kph.

It does seem to think it's doing 2.8mph while sat on the table, which may make its accuracy a bit suspect 😉

Physics.

Drag goes as square of speed, so power needed to overcome it goes as speed cubed. Doubling your top speed needs 8 times the power output. 50ish mph is many riders maximum speed, and is governed more by conditions than rider power. The pros in the TdeF (Thor H's solo descent springs to mind) were hitting 100kph (60+mph) and that hit the headlines, so recreational riders hitting 77mph is frankly laughable.

I'm dubious of the 77 too - but people often don't believe the 50mph-ish claims either, as if it's some sort of heroic feat - those were the ones I was defending really. In my experience it's pretty easy to hit 50mph in the right place - I do it quite regularly on a short dip on my commute - sprint over the top and tuck down and gravity does the rest as long as it's not windy. This is only for a second or so of course - but it's maximum speeds we're talking about. I wouldn't want to go much faster on my traditional light steel framed machine I don't think, but on our stiff touring tandem 50+ doesn't feel so dangerous, and we did let it pick up to near 60 once back in our pre-responsibility days.
EDIT: But not for long - I think that's the important part.

the first time I did 50ish was on a long downhill into grange over sands in the lakes as a teenager. A jag passed me, then slowed down and "paced" at the side of me and gave me a massive thumbs up. I'm an MTB masher not a roadie spinner and I've spun out and used my power by then so for me its all about hill and tailwind.

Like you its getting from 50 to 77 that I'm calling BS on, most learner legal 125 motorbikes wont break 77 and they put out 11kW. The Tour sprinters apparently hit 1600w.

One of the early NWD videos has some cool high speed manualing on a road descent, totally spoiled by a screen caption claiming he's doing 70mph. He puts some pedal turns in to keep the wheel up FFS 🙄

@ Mike Harris - think you need to go out & see what a verified true 50mph down a hill is like before you start believing your £14.99 worth of technology & the 77mph claim.

...well, 51mph through a speed gun on the Kamikaze in Mammoth. But that was followed by the grease from my hubs splattering itself all over my rims. Considering i was using 'Canti's' back then, it was the stopping i was concentrating on, not the speeding up.

Even so, not really wanted to go faster than that again. It is in part just a vertical gravel motorway though, so i dont believe it was a tricky feat, just a silly one. Thats what happens when you're 20, and being pursued by Dave Cullinan. After he finished drafting me, he simply bolted past about 100 meters from the finish tho'

49mph down Sutherbruff Rigg (I think its called) in Dalby Forest behind Low Dalby. It was my standard route before all the built trails were put in and I tried it a couple of times but couldn't hit 50. Steep fireroad with a bit of a run out and still sketchy on my 2001 Enduro.
