+1 for Etrex. Pretty basic but totally bullet proof and around 18 hours battery life on a decent set of rechargeables. I've got the old version (not H), mate has the newer version and it's more accurate and never loses signal (mine occasionally loses signal if biking quickly under dense tree cover - works once you stop though). If you've got a copy of tracklogs or Multimap get the leads from eBay.

Garmin Geko is about £15.00 more than the etrex but smaller and easier to use on a bike as all buttons on the front. Same functions, only really loose signal under tree cover but never found it a major prob.

I am thinking of selling my etrex legend with bike mount, cable and instructions. as I don't use it any more, I can even hook you up with the garmin topo maps for it too 😀 (but you didn't get them from me 😉 ) was thinking about £55 posted??
email is in profile if you are interested mate.

I've seen screen shots of Garmin's topo maps and they look dismal.
I use memory map on a £100 refurbished Mio P350.
Not just a ten digit grid reference, but a scrolling 1:25000 OS map.

With memory maps, is that installed onto a GPS or is stand alone on a pc that then creates waypoints to use?

Also, the Etrex system has some sort of mapping software on it, do I then upload the waypoints onto it or do I install memory maps directly onto it?

Can I use my cheap and nasty Binatone Carrera X350 to do the job. It's wind mobile something or other, and runs hacked tom tom fine.

You can get memory map gps units but they is spensive. On the etre it has basic mapping courtesy if the topo maps you upload into it. You then use memory map on your pc to plan the route then upload it to the etrex. Well thats what i do anyway. You can plot routes with topo sofyware on the pc but the maps are a bit cack in comparison to os maps. I also have a *cough* copy *cough* of memory map

Just had a play with the demo software from the website and it's worth buying. A little expensive, but definitely a nice bit of software

I use an e-trex H combined with OS maps for exactly the purpose you specify and can't recommend it highly enough for this purpose. It also works with the equivalent French and Swiss maps for when you hit the Alps. I don't know how to use it with software etc. I'd use this in preference to the alternatives which have been suggested because it's got better battery life and reception. Be careful if you use it in the Alpujarras because there the maps are dodgy (not the GPS).

I've had one of these for the last few years:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Forerunner-Wrist-Mounted-Personal-Training/dp/B0001ILXGQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1278845656&sr=8-1

Mount it on the bars (waterproof), and pretty solid.

I've been looking at them today.

Explain how it works please.

How detailed is the info on the screen.

Ignore that you are using real paper maps aren't you.

With the simpler GPS setups does it just go way point to waypoint that I input via something like Multimaps or is it something else.

This has got me really confused.
