Hi, i ride a 2007 Blur LT and mostly do trails and woods etc. I want a bar that gives me enough leverage and control for fast downhill sections and tight switchbacks, but also enough comfort for more epic rides.
I have been looking at the 2009 Syntace Vector 31.8 Carbon Handlebar.
I was wandering if any one had experience with the Syntace bar or if any one could reconmend a good bar to me. Any comments would be much appreciated.
do you mean the Syntace VRO system?
think the bar comes in at 690mm. mine does anyway.
great system as it allows you to quickly adjust the position of the bar; out stretched if you've long slog up hill; pulled back tight for a day of downhilling; or somewhere in the middle for a more XC feel.
if you go too wide you may end up with problems on tight switchbacks. i find 690mm a good width.
Wow, thanks i didn't know about that system. As far as the bar goes i comletely agree with you on the width. I think 680 would be perfect for me. The one i was looking looks similar to your's and has a 12 degree sweep back with a very low rise. My problem is i cant find many actual reviews on the bar itself and it seems no shops in the uk stock it. How long have you had yours for and do you think you will ever change it?
how ridiculous 😕
(both of you)
Why is it ridiculous? I notice you have no actual oppinions or reconmendations. You probably couldn't afford the tech anyway, lol.
not a question of money. look at the prices of even the basics in biking.....
i'm in germany and had never seen them stocked in the UK. it is a german manufacturer, but even here not many places stock them.
i can give you the number/email of a shop who deals a lot with Liteville/Syntace (same firm, based in Kempten, Bavaria). they may be able to offer a better price than some online stores.

What a knob.
?The tech
It's a clamped tube.
Whilst the idea of a 'what handle bar for normal riding?' thread is highly amusing hearing about the Syntace (well the stem) is quite interesting....
No such thing as 'the best trail riding handlebar' - depends on too many different factors. And that stem thing is just silly.
That syntace abortion is the ugliest bar/stem combo ever! Sorry to be a troll but it needs to be said. I would not call undoing 4 bolts "quickly adjusting bar position". Not something I would want to do whilst out on a ride (or would ever bother to anyway). It is also far too high in the position shown (IMHO). Adjustable height/angle stems = bad
Most of the people I know (including myself) run this setup for "trail riding":
70/90mm (depending on rider height or pref) stem with oversize bar clamp (e.g. easton or thomson x4)
Medium or low rise oversize bar with 685mm ish width (e.g. easton monkeybar or monkeylite bar)
Short enough for tech downhill sections and long enough to keep the front wheel down and some air in your lungs on the uphill sections.
Easton EA50, anythign else is just tarty (which isnt a bad thing)
I'm liking my Salsa Pro-Moto bar, flat, 660mm wide, 11 degrees of bend, conventional 25.4mm clamp and only GBP 40...
Easton or Raceface bars for me- EA30s on one bike, Evolve DHs on another and Diaboluses (which I like the best out the lot but you'd need to trim them at 710mm).
As for the Syntace set up- if you're happy with your position then you don't need it. Surely you set it somewhere once then leave it there? So you may as well have a proper stem.
I find Syntace bars a bit funny, really. They're a strange shape. They make some nice normal stems, though.
Best bar: Easton Monkeylite.
each to their own.....
two bolts in fact but lets not be pedantic about things.... 🙂
works for me. as i said i can adjust it to suit what/where i'm riding.
Personally, I really like the Sunline V1's, they aren't silly heavy or light, seem to be OK after a few crashes, and aren't mentally wide at 711mm and I find them good on wooded singletrack, as if my shoulders will fit through the gap the bars will.
If you find that you ride with your hands right at the end of the bars, and sometimes with the outside edge of your palm hanging over, its well worth trying slightly wider bars.

I quite like the Syntace VRO system too (although not enough that I'm currently using one). It is no fuss at all to adjust, a rather elegant design (even though the resulting stem is frightfully ugly!), doesn't creak, doesn't weigh very much and allows you to change your position really quite a lot. If you've got one bike that doubles for playing about and also for 50 mile non-technical slogs then that really does help. 🙂
Easton monkey dh un cut on 575 here. Wish i had them on all my bikes but too pricey.
You probably couldn't afford the tech anyway, lol.
That, and, "can you trackstand" can pretty much win you ANY bike related debate... lol
i've got the bontrager big sweep flat bar in silver.
it looks lovely, has a few mm up sweep, 12 degree backsweep and is wide as it comes stock on the trek singlespeeds.
hard to get hold of in the uk (or was) had to order mine in, but worth it at £30
rubbish pic but you get the idea
Thanks for all the input, im definately going for a 680mm lowrise bar with a 12 degree sweep back.
Cheers.
Thank you BigDummy...... 😉

i'm not slagging off anyones buying power......
how much is it? Just want to know if I can afford it or not.
Not that I'd buy it. Cos it's daft.
70 Euros gets you membership of the Ugly Club. 🙂
yay. I can afford that.
But I'll spend my 70 euros on something more attractive.
Like a butt plug or something.
70mm Thompson x4 and EA30s for me £50 plus seems a lot of cash for a bent pipe the 30's are £20.00 which seemed good value.
I'd rather use it as a butt plug than fit it to a bike that I own.
I'm after some burlier wider bars, about ~710mm, whats the deal with Scandium DH bars? Good idea?
Those sunline V1's look good and strong and are 711.
Can't go far wrong with the Sunlines, so I know what I would pick over the unknown Scandium DH bars (I am assuming they would be KCNC ones?)
No I've noticed a few well known manufacturers doing scandium 'DH' bars, in addition to the rash of scandium XC bars about. No reason you have to build light with scandium, and with its closer tighter grain structure it could be a great alloy to build DH bars from, but I don't know, I'm just guessing, which is why I'm asking if anyone knows anything.
Control Tech do some scandium ones but at 280g they are no lighter than alu. So I guess they are either slightly stronger, or aimed at the sort of people who pay silly money for parts covered with carbon effect sticky backed plastic.
I like my Reverse bars, similar shape to Eastons and 300g for the 760mm version. They do a 710mm which comes in loads of tasteless colours, which sounds right up your alley.
I have an Easton ea70 and it's fantastic across the moors but not so good in woods. I also have a Race Face which is black with white graphics and I like this in the woods more but I'm not too sure about the colour.
Everything is a compromise with mountain bike equipment....
'Scandium' is ally
You know what I meant you pedantic muppet. 😉
