I am currently competing in the trailquest events that Dark and White run as part of their winter league and round three is this Sunday in good ol' Hope. But Hope is not all its cracked up to be anymore by the sounds of it, things are going downhill (ignore the pun).

This is an email I just recieved from the organiser:

'Hi - there are a couple of important things to mention about the event on Sunday:

1. We are aware that the Hope Valley is being specifically targeted by bike thieves. We have heard of one instance recently where a mountain bike had 6 locks securing it but it was still stolen! We strongly suggest therefore that you are extra vigilant anywhere in the Hope Valley area (including the event car park and start/finish area).'

That coupled with the recent eighteen theft I saw reported on this here site not so long ago is quite shocking for somewhere which I have always had quite an idylic image of (Edale/Castleon/Hope). Also no doubt it will put of a hell of a lot of people from engaging in this sport in such a great location such as the Hope Valley. Think we need to get out the pitchforks and burning torches!...

Or, when (if) the thieving scum are caught, chemically castrate them. The threat of being caught would certainly put me off then!

Didn't some one ask Clyde why he robbed banks? "Because that's where the money is kept". Same thing.

you've been sadly mislead

people think crime is an urban thing, if you'd been around the hope valley long you'd know the amount of drugs and petty crime there is about

Edale is notorious, i've been to parties where there have been caravans literally full to the roof with drugs

There was a Riot in Bradwell a while ago when it was rumoured that one of the Jamie Bulger murderers had been re-homed there

The Derwent Valley used to be a big spot for large scale drugs trading, as did the Edale valley and there have been (to my knowledge) 2 triad murders in the area.

CID or similar had secret surveillance cameras hidden in treestumps on the Derwent Lane for years

Isn't it great when the punishment fits the crime.

Thieves know where the good stuff is, bike thieves will go where the expensive bikes are.

MrMichealWright - that is quite shocking about the ammount of crime going down over there, obvisouly im not completley blinkered and realise that there will be crime everywhere you go, but being as rural as it is, I did not expect that kind of level. I grew up in Stockport and have always had fond memories of the Peak District, especially those ares that I have mentioned, they are a bit of a tourist trap and to be honest have always found visiting great fun, never any problems or hassles, moved to Glossop to be closer to the area but not to be miles away from Manchester. Still though the extent of the thefts is pretty ridiculous, six locks for gods sake!
