Been falling out of love with my Mojo HD 140 for a while... it's not her, it's me, I still find her curves and lines oh so sexy to look at (best damn looking bike going around still IMHO), it's just that I'm finding my SS Tranny more enjoyable to ride! Oh dear, I just admitted to preferring to ride a Tranny... I think part of the reason is something is wrong with the setup on the Mojo, it just feels wrong to ride (unless it's pointed down, then it's ace, feels sooo stable, but I still suck, which is perhaps another reason we're falling out, I just don't ride her hard or well enough...)
Anyhoo, moving on from the innuendo... Current setup on the Mojo is a 160mm BOS Deville fork up the front and an Angleset headset (which I think is running a +0.5 cup), so we have a 160mm front and a 140mm rear. Tire up front is a Rubber Queen 2.4 (Ardent out the back). Stem is a 70mm jobbie from Point One, bars are Easton Haven risers...
The issue I'm having at the moment is that on the flat (eg. on the road) I feel like I'm pushing forwards through the pedal stroke, ie. it feels like I'm sitting (or leaning?) too far back, it doesn't feel like I'm pedaling up and down, but kind of like a mild recumbent position if that makes any sense?
My saddle is pretty far forward and my knees look to be in the right spot (from what I know/understand of this), but it still feels weird to pedal (particularly after switching from the Tranny or road bike to the 'Big Bike')... The Mojo also feels really slow and ponderous in it's handling compared to the Tranny at slow speeds, motorbike like almost.
What's going on here? My guess is too much height in the front (160mm fork and big volume/tall 2.4 tyre) screwing angles up (with the angleset not helping)? Or something else? What can I adjust/change to try and fix this? Change the angleset to a -ve cup? Get the Deville reduced to 140mm?
All ideas, comments and suggestions invited and welcome, cheers ๐
How about a second set of forks that are 140mm and keep the 160mm BOS for uplift days etc
Itdoes sound like the A2C height is too much for the bike .
Probably lose the angleset too
too slack? Drop to a lower volume tyre or lower the forks a bit?
What sort of stuff do you ride on it?
It sounds like you have a large set of possible contributory factors! Simple things first...
- Check sag on rear shock - too much sag can give you exactly the feeling you describe
- Set angleset to -0.5 or try a normal headset and see what difference that makes, remember that it may make the bike too steep nearing max fork compression, so take it easy on first few rides!
- Swap tyres around for a brief spin around the block, from memory the size difference is fairly noticeable. You may need to balance the height profile of your tyres
- Check stem length and saddle position - you may simply be too far back. You may need to use a slightly longer stem and run your saddle further forward on rails
If you ride your other two bikes more than the HD - it's not surprising the HD with your described set up feels choppered out!
Apologies if a little blunt or lots of typos - still half asleep.
