Hey guys,
I have never used clipless pedals in my life. In fact I've never really done any form of road cycling other than commuting despite mountain biking for years.
I've taken to riding my singlespeed beater commuter about on the roads and done some pretty big loops. it may not be the best tool for the job but i've found it more fun than expected but feel like being clipped in would make it a bit easier.
whats the cheap but gets the job done approach? cheers
Shimano m520 pedal can be had for around £20, hard to beat at any price.
Shoes are a bit more personal, i use shimano because they suit my foot shape, mine were around £80, i find for me that with cheaper shoes i get a ‘hotspot’ on the ball of my foot due to the sole flexing.
I’ve only ever used shimano shoes though, you may find cheapies to be fine, and I can’t speak for other brands.
Shimano m520 pedals and whichever spd compatible shoes that fit.
Perfect i was expecting the pedals to be more than that actually considering the costs of some flats. they seem pretty popular and can have a look for deals on shoes
Oh, find somewhere soft to practice clipping in and out, you WILL, at some point come to a complete stop and topple over while wondering why you can’t pull your feet out backwards.
Everyone does this, but usually only once.
haha yeah i've seen plenty of people do it. especially embaressing at traffic lights.
Boardman MTB Pro pedals were ~£25, hardest thing will be finding truthful stock levels anywhere right now, bargain bike things are like gold dust.
I've got some of those Boardman pedals and find them harder to locate and clip in to that the M540s on my commuter or XT Trail SPDs on the other MTB.
I'd go with M520s or M540s, the 540s don't need a special tool to undo the nut on the side for regreasing. Mine must be over a decade old at this point and still going strong.
Yeo pedals as above, and then find sgoes in sales that are your size. Or decaton usually do some decent ones for not too much money.
Crank Brothers Candy 1 would be my suggestion. They have loads of float and the mechanism isn't so vicious as most other spuds. Normally around 40 - 50 quid. The newer design is pretty bomb proof though the cleats wear faster than shimano but it's a price I'm willing to pay to save my knees. They also never clog with mud.
Cheers everyone, definitely looks like the basic shimano ones are the way to go. Who knows I may even like it enough that I'll start riding my mtb clipped in - though still doubtful that it wont end in a horrendous crash despite what my riding buddies say
Also, you get free cleats with the m520’s, so a complete bargain considering the cleats on their own are around a tenner.
Timing. Fitted M520s to my roadie bike today after asking a similar question a couple of weeks back.
