I came with my new 4-pot XT 8120 calipers. It looks like it should be used with a mountain bolt. I checked the on-line pdf instructions but it aint there

Sits on top of your caliper bolts. Supposedly stops them working loose.

Yep, as relpased_mandalorian has said it's a Shimano's belt and braces approach to keep brake bolts from loosening.
