I have been eyeing up the new XTR and have been slightly amazed with the price! But not in a good way! Lets just say i was running a 40/28 or 42/30 crankset with a 11/36 block what rear mech could i run? Medium cage or long? There seems to be a conflict of opinion when this subject is brought up!

Have you had a look at the shimano tech documents on like? They will spec cassette difference, max socket and total difference.
Just had a look. Rd-m980 sgs. That's the super long cage. Both will handle the cassette and the chainset but theshort cage has a total capacity limit of 35 and you need 37. You could get away with it if you avoid cross over gearsi
