[#2930761]

I am building up a new bike and am thinking about straying from my usual Avid Elixir brakes that I have on my other bikes.

I am looking for something that is lightweight and that offers good mudulation / power. I would be running 160mm discs F+R although would like the option of upping the front to a bigger disc if required.

Price wise I am happy to spend up to about £400 in total but would obviously prefer a bit less.

Any recommendations?

Hope XC look great - lightest too. Maybe new XTR Race?

Formula R1

Excellent power, good modulation, lightweight & can be upgraded to make them lighter than the Hope X2 race brakes

Out of all the brakes I've used* they are the best brakes I've ever used

*Hope Mono Mini, Hope mini, Avid Juicy 3, Avid Juicy 5, Hayes Nines, Hayes Stroker Trail, Shimano Deore, Shimano XT

New XTR are INCREDIBLE!

I'm running the race levers, 140/160 rotors. Can't fault them at all, not even a hint of pump or fade on long & steep descents where my previous Juicy Ultimates would feel out of depth.

Another vote for Formula, either R1's for XC lightness or The Ones if you want huge stopping power with not much weight penalty...

I think XTR are centerlock only, I need 6 bolt - should have said, sorry.

Noticed the Avid XX are available for £150 per brake, any views on those.

Will go have a look at the R1s and hope.

you can use the xtr with any rotors, plus the ice tech will be 6 bolt soon

Yup, just had a look - oops

Hmm, so many options now....

Thinking between the R1s, XX and XTR

and now decinding between XTR and XX, think I might go with the XTR as I have always fancied a set of those.

I had XX last year and they were utter toss - could never bleed them properly, always rubbing, needed rebuilding regularly.

Got XTR Race now and I'll just echo Dougal's thoughts. They are awesome. I'm using KCNC and Avid 6-bolt rotors and they're superb.

Thanks, pretty much decided for me with that and previous comments. Also had a look at internet reviews and they look pretty good. also if I can use Avid 6 bolt rototrs then I have spares on them so all good there.
