[#1851354]

building up a jake the snake for mainly commuting on road, but also the odd ride off road. id like as light as poss, and id not be wanting to pay big money. just want a decent light wheelset thatll cope with a bit of cyclocross too.

dont know much about roadie stuff, so what sort of thing should i be looking for in the ads?

I have hope hoops with open pro's, which are nice. Would certainly recommend them.

As above. Open pros built with a 32 spoke three cross pattern, laced onto the best hubs you can afford. Best compromise of cost/weight/reliability/repairability/strength etc etc.

That's what I went for, the default option of Mavic Open Pro rims (mine are ceramic but they're £70/rim!) on the best hubs you can get. I went for Hope road hubs and DT Swiss black spokes.

Bombproof, easy to get spares for and the ceramic rims really aid braking in the wet. The wheels have coped fine with the Three Peaks and numerous other off-road rides, plenty tough enough and you can easily get 35c tyres onto the rims (it says max 28c but ignore that!)

Mavic Aksiums are about £100. Not the lightest wheels in the world but very good value for money.

I think mine (the ceramic rims, Hope hubs and DT Swiss spokes) were about £350 at full retail price plus the cost of a wheel build (I build my own).

Normal Open Pro rims are about £35-40 each IIRC, double that for ceramic.
