I want some lighter - circa 1700g - XD 6 Bolt Boost wheels, They'll be used for Trail riding and Marathon racing on my Scott Spark - I have a circa £350 budget. I seem to be limited to:

a) Hunt's race wide wheels

b) Some actionsports.de wheels but have no idea if the Fun hubs / N Light rims are any good especially for tubeless fitting.

c) increasing my budget to £500 to get some DT XC1700

Any advise or anything else about I should consider?

For some reason I thought you already had the Hunts and I was going to ask if they are any good?

No I cancelled my order and waited. Ive had sone poor feedback from another forum member that the rear hub on the fatter wheels was stiff as in hardly any freewheel, and customer service on the return was poor.

Oh. Mrs Yak was considering them. Maybe something like hope/crests or the JRA bitex/crests then. Not £350 though.

Could you get a custom build from somewhere like CRC and pick Hope hubs / fairly lightweight rims?

Or Superstar May have some end of line hubs you could get built up - the fuel is in stock in xd driver I believe.

Given the limited choices available to you, I wouldn't personally discount Hunt due to one persons view. I have only ever heard good things about their wheels in general and their customer service.

I’ve got Hunt road wheels and so far so good. Had a good service for crash replacement. Probably done around 700 ish miles on them so far. No hub dramas yet.

I'd buy a set of second hand DT Swiss XR1501's, (or XM1501's). They come up well within budget.

A set of £350 new wheels will be significantly worse.

In fact, there is a new set on eBay for £325. Buy some boost adapters & off you go 🙂

Fair point Gingerone.

There's a set of Crossmax Elite on CRC for £209 but don't they have property spokes/nipples or something?

Hopes on XM404/XM421 depending on tyre width, could even go down to a XR361/391 depending on how aggressive you are with wheels.

Swaying away from Stan's, cracked a few crests and arches now, even with correct spoke tension.

Well I managed to find these in the CRC sale:

£209, and at least my Spark is the Red/white/Black model... They should take circa 300g of my wheel weight by all accounts.

Why not custom built, just out of interest?

They’re a bit light on spokes at 24 per wheel is my main observation - but that will probably only matter if you’re heavy on wheels. You may also find Mavic straight pull spokes are expensive to replace and not many places stock them.

To answer both the above - not custom built because I don't know what I'm doing to spec them properly, and I want a quick replacement Wheelset as I've dented my Synchros. Plus, they'll be used for racing, I don't want to spend a fortune on wheels that are in a higher risk environment.

I'm light on wheels and they are going on a FS, the only time I've ever replaced a spoke was when my front wheel was run over in a mass startline crash, but then I let the LBS deal with it. At £209 the Mavics are almost disposable - if anything goes wrong I still have my Synchros as backup and I'll probably look at the Hunt's again after a few more reviews appear.
