hi there,
ive set up a wheel building company we've done road stuff and cyclocross in the past, but i recently did several pairs of xc race wheels that work out remarkabley cheap and work well.
my question to you is what wheel builds would get you excited or would you like to see.

Hope or King hubs on Mavic 819 discs or stans rims for trail riding are a good bet

cant beat 721s on Hope hubs. Well not until Mavic decide to do some 821s.

+1

But bear in mind Roger Musson (wheelpro) couldn't match the prices Hope sell for, so has seeminlgy given up building them.

Something different. Lets see some carbon AM wheels that don't cost £2000

Nice wide light rims like Stans but not made of cheese. Tubeless compatibility is a MUST HAVE (tape and sealant is fine but it must work).

Stick with decent sealed hubs - make sure they can do the QR/15/20 front and QR/10/12 rear with easy changes.

Fancy staight pull spokes look cool but add little functionality and make getting replacement spokes a pain.

24/28/etc lacing always sounds cool - but you need to make sure spare rims and hubs are available. Mountain bikes get battered about more than road bikes and we do damage our kit so spares availability and price are a high priority (for me anyway).

Sounds like a nice wee niche business... good luck 😀

The most important thing of the wheel is the build itself.

If you can do that well, you will get business.

The parts you lace together are almost irrelevant.

Similar to messiah. I'm really liking my Stans Flows on Hope Pro2 hubs so I'd like to see something with similar strength to weight ratios, 23-27mm widths, decent sealed hubs with standard spokes, tubless compatible and weighing under 1,800g / pair. Budget wise I'd be looking to pay between £230 & £300.

I'd like a single speed hub laced to an 819

The option of a 36 hole build. It might have change now but I asked merlin and they said it wasn't an option they offered.

Edit: Xiphon +1

Something to compete with the benchmark, Hope Pro 2 / Stans Flow.

Key characteristics:
Run ordinary SP/DP tyres tubeless with Stans fluid, as well as USTs.
Work well with Maxxis tyres
Extremely strong
Fairly light
Easy to maintain, all parts readily available and cheap.
Well sealed hubs.

Light strong and cheap.

Can't go wrong if you crack that one.

DT Super Comp spokes

Are not worth the money, make for a flexy wheel without a great weight saving.

Come up with a cartridge bearing conversion kit for Shitmano cup & cone hubs.

And while your at it a good quality bolt-up axle conversion kit, with nice posh bolts like the ones that Hope do, but will fit std dropouts; for the aforementioned.

And an eccentric conversion kit for the aforementioned aforementioned for singlespeedingness.
