o...Ive been riding for just over a year. I have a rockhopper 2008 which I am selling and I have a budget of a grand (1k) to buy something new
I would like a hardtail
I want to maximise the groupset without seriously comprimising frame
I am buying via cyclescheme so ( as I have discovered ) discounted bikes i.e. bikes over grand to start with are a problem
I am a 41 year old MTB addict after only a year.
My preferred cycling is cross country, fairly long rides 20-30 miles are normal; on heathland, single track, wooded areas etc.
I also ride to work joining up off road sections with road where neccersary
Any and all advice gratefully recieved Question Question
Holyjo-what shop will you be getting the cycle to work scheme from? Some of them dont offer as good a range as others while some will do a custom build and others will not.
I was thinking of cycle uk.but can be flexible as long as they do cycle scheme. Any suggestions then ?
genesis and boardman are popular bikes for the cycle sceme cos of their bang for your buck. something slightly more tough would be an orange crush or a marin rocky ridge. it isnt a problem to pay a bit on top of your voucher so do a bit of overtime and treat yourself 😉
I was going to suggest something from the Genesis range as-well. Altitude range are very good steel hardtails.

You will get nothing much for it unless you have pimped it. I suggest keeping it, stick on cable disk brakes and 1.5 slicks and actually cycle to work on it - keeping the nice new shiney cube bike your going to buy good 😉

Slowrider..........
I wanted to buy a Scott Scale 40 Hardtail and foud one reduced from 1300 to 999. The shop said they couldnt sell it to me on cycle scheme as they had to pay 10% to cycle scheme and this would somehow take me over the 1k limit. I offered to pay the 79 quid differance and they said they couldnt. If anyone knows anything different I would love to know
Cube are great value for money and I also second the Genesis Altitude. I've just built one up and had it's maiden ride tonight. Wow!! Can't beleive how comfortable and bouncy steel is. 🙂
I'd look at the Orange Crush if you can work it so you pay the extra (I think it retails at £1,050 so only £50). If not, I've seen somewhere offering a "limited edition" version specifically for the CTW scheme at £999, but you seem to loose a lot for that £50, mainly the Fox forks which IMO is one of the best bits for that price.
I'm no expert, but I didn't think the shops had to pay any 10% to the scheme...??
