As a follow on to a previous post,

I always carry a small Ortlieb first aid kit and a space blanket ( well I do ride with Sharki so needs must ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) best I do say I have done a first aid course so yes I am no expert but I do have a little knowledge.

So what sort of blanket, survival bag (aka orange bin bag)or even a Vango storm shelter http://www.camping-supplies-uk.com/tents/vango/vango-stormshelter.htm type thing do you lot recomend, is a space blanket realy sufficient yes I know it is better than nothing

Either a orange tough plastic bag, or a proper emergancy shelter.

Depends on where you are riding.

I own;

Space blanket
Orange bag
3-4 man shelter
8 man shelter

Deer skin bivvi bag.

And you only need arm bands not a survival blanket...

I have one of these for fell running. Only really take if running a considerable distance or remote.

Sold on fact I needed a bag (as opposed to a blanket) for an event and this was the lightest on sale. Now take instead of a blanket as the weight and space difference is minimal.

Blanket is okay and sufficient but a bag is better, a bivi is better than that, then a tent etc....... so really depends on how you are measuring the risk.

Cracking idea that bag I think I will order one later

Okay my riding is in the devon somerset occasionally dartmoor / exmoor area but to carry something like that makes sense not a packing issue either

wow that bag is awesome. I might have to get one for next winter.

I carry two space blankets like this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EMERGENCY-SPACE-BLANKETS-TWO-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ220407852323QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_3?hash=item220407852323&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

due them being super light and pretty darn cheap.

The foil blankets/bags are probably just better than carrying nothing. In high winds or if they've been stored for a while, they tear or fall apart pretty easily.

Bags are better for insulating a casualty, and can still be used as a blanket if you can't move the injured person into a bag

I have an orange hiz viz plastic bag and a goretex bivvy (ex MOD, 20 ebay).

Regrading space blankets, having used one I nearly sweated to death, so won't be using one again (*but better than nothing, and so small/light)

I too have a ex mod gortex bivvy bag (free bless the royal engineers) but I feel they are a bit too big for my Camelback Mule
