Just fitted Thule 598 and it's really rather impressive.
It is, however, a long way up to the roof of a XC90! Not too bad lifting the gnarmac bike, but the gnarpoon might be a stretch.
So, can anyone recommend a small, very light stepladder?
I await the usual mix of useful suggestions and pisstaking.

Maybe not this long though.
I've seen quite a few use folding stools that fold flat, failing that stilts might be good 😀
A 2 step ladder for a tenner would be suffice unless your totally a hobbit 😕

Yeti folding platform , you can get 1 for around 25 beer tokens and have a very useful bit of kit .
Probably an aluminium hop-up?

I used to chuck my bikes in the back of my XC90, like that was the point of buying it.
I had a roof rack on it for my paddleboards, I just opened the rear door and used the sill to step up whilst pushing the board onto the rack, then used the sills either side to step up & strap the boards down.
Just let the tyres down, that should get you a few inches.
Can't you use the mounting block you normally use to get on your horse? Surely you didn't take them out when you remodeled the estate's outbuildings?

Only if it was a proper 4x4, obvs it'll be rollin' on some phat 20" wheels, so there's about 5mm of tyre there!

My mate had one of those, until I stepped on it (/went through it). They aren't ideal for 'real' men!
I had this problem with my estate car, ex made a wooden step that's rock solid. Had an interesting experience recently with the Thule carrier as my son's Propel has weird tubing, both shape and size.
Anyway, bikes should go inside cars. Having experienced a roof carrier with my bike attached flying off onto a dual carriageway I've become a tad nervous.
at about 83Kg I may not be a real man in STW terms but we got one of those for the kids using sink/bog and I've used it plenty for odd jobs, no problem.My mate had one of those, until I stepped on it (/went through it). They aren't ideal for 'real' men!

Sell the XC90 and buy an estate (Ocavia obviously)
Those plastic step ups like flashy showed are light and compact. Unless you're a total ox and/or have a proper heavy bike to lift it should be sturdy enough.

call me Ox, but I, too, have put my size twelve orthopaedic platform shoes through the top of one. Cant recommend.
I've got a Fiat Multipla (higher than an XC90) and despite being only 5ft8 I can get all four bikes (including one kids bike which weighs more than the others) on the roof without too much difficulty - standing on the sill, leaning against the door. Even easier if the car is parked kerbside. No step necessary!
