no, not me, id have no chance 😀

my mates got in and fancies doing it ss, so has asked me to canvas opinion from you experts on what ss bike or frame he could use.  hes looking on ebay for frames at the moment so he can build it up with parts to suit his budget.

i offered him my singular gryphon, but i think it falls foul of tyre width and flared bars (mine has ragley luxy) which is a shame, so he'd like some advice on what options there available for him to buy.

he hasnt given me a budget, but he like to get value for money, nothing fancy (read 'very expensive') 🙂

any recommendations please?

thanks

Quickest thread ever, he's just told me he's bought an on-one pompetamine.

As you were everyone..... 🙂

Cheers

I thought ss were banned for the event, but apparently not as they probably assume nobody would be that crazy

Isla Rowntree was on a singlespeed the other year. Be a bit spinny on the road but a chunk off road is yomping anyway. Mrs has done it twice on a steel frame I brazed in the shed (but not singlespeed). Didn't Samurai from here do it fixed one year?

I always wonder what the line in the rules about "qr or 12mm thru axle only" is about. Taken to the letter, that would surely preclude a nutted or bolted singlespeed hub?

I’ve done it a few times on SS - tbh it’s only the road where it’s a disadvantage.

First time was a borrowed Arkose, others were on my Chinese carbon frame with eccentric bb. With all the shouldering I figure the lighter the better.

My SS bikes are all QR rear axles with vertical dropouts and a tensioner, works perfectly well, I use that because no faffing with chain lengths or EBBs or whatever of I want to change gear

It's been a while since I last did it, but from memory, each of the hills had about 45 minutes of bike carrying, out of a total time (for me) of between 4hrs 10 to 4hrs 30 mins so over half the event with the bike on my back. That's quite funny, thinking about it!

It will be fine if he just wants to get round but it will be mad slow on the road (ca. 18 miles). You'd get insta-dropped out of every group and lose out on a lot of sheltered riding.

If it was 3 hikes and some road it would be simple, but Pen y Ghent (the last peak) is about 2/3 rideable depending on how strong you are feeling. You would need to be animal strong to grind a big ratio up PyG in the race, but if you gear it low just for this you'd be crawling on the roads.

All that being said 'just get round' is excellent advice for a first go as there is really nothing else like this race (entered but no place for me this year 🙁 )

From memory Shaggy held (holds?) the record for SS at t’Peaks. I remember Richpips attempting the Fixed record, getting a mechanical and being towed in by Chipps.

Dan Treby got it off him a year or several later. off to Google who's  had it since...

OP, if budget and comfort are priorities, your Gryphon with tyres and a bar change?

i did offer it him even after we looked at the rules and regs, but i think he just didnt fancy the faff of changing bars and tape, tubeless tyres etc plus the potential for damaging the bike, even tho i wouldnt have been bothered.  he just wanted something of his own i think, so bought the pompetamine.

he says hes aware of all this, and acknowledges it, and knows hes never going to win or even do that well, he just wants a different challenge 🙂

he said he did the dirty reiver on a ss with 38/18 and thinks thats what he'll go for this time too.

cheers
