[#10675191]

Just got some nice TA cranks for my ancient commuter bike to take a bit of weight out and see if I can lose the clunk. It has a classic steel cotterpin crankset I'd like to replace and I think the TA look very nice.

They haven't come with a BB and knowing they're both old and French, I'm guessing the taper may not conform with the "modern" standard. They guy that sold them seemed to be knowledgeable of such things and suggested that a Shimano would fit. Can anyone confirm either way and if so would anyone care recommend a SQ Taper BB? I'm assuming that the answer would be Shimano UN72 by default if they're still available.

Bare in mind that this bike lives outside and does up to 60 miles/week on the commute so a fit and forget is a desirable trait. ;o)

Also if anyone's got any idea how to calculate a chainline from axle length on a single ring TA the info would be much appreciated. It's a 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub if that makes any difference.

Cheers

Gary

If there is one thing I'll give shimano credit for, is thier bog standard square taper bottom brackets.
Slightly more than the really cheap options but I bought a really cheap option and it was lunched within months.

Just get the right size standard shimano jobbie.

Are you talking about TA Cyclotourist cranks? If so, Shimano do fit nicely and if I remember correctly, 118mm for a triple, 113mm for a double and about 110mm for a single ring. You'll also need a 23mm x 1mm puller.

Thanks gents. Yes they're Cylcotourist (I believe) the odd puller is something I was afraid of but I'm sure they'll be available.

Anyone got an old 68x110 XT or XTR BB they want to get rid of? Needs to have a decent amount of life left. Not sure if it'd be worth any more than a new UN55 from CRC mind but worth asking the question.
