needing to rebuild the alloy nippled wheel - the few a generous friend gave me from spares pile are too wide a diameter.
How do I know what diameter? I think they're 12mm length.
I'd guess he's given you 14g and you have a fancy lightweight 15g wheel. Or you have a more normal 14g and he's given you some fat 13gs. What spoke key fits? Have you measured your spokes (near the thread) with a caliper?
I use my spoke key. It's fitted every spoke I've ever tensioned over two decades...
ive no calipers..I could try tomorrow to get them measured.
As in, your spoke key fits both the nipples on the wheel and the new nipples you've been given?
too wide a diameter.
Too wide in what way? Loose on the spoke thread?
Yes, loose on threads.
is it a branded wheel that you could google for a spec ?
I'd put 20p on Bez's first guess and you have 1.8mm 15g spokes rather than the more common 2mm 14g.
Spoke threads are rolled, so the thread diameter is slightly larger than the spoke diameter, common spoke diameters are; 2.3, 2.0, 1.8, 1.6. (mm)
I would guess 1.8.
It transpires that most of my nipples were correct. However I have three spokes that are narrower...guess which nipples broke? Guess which spokes I was then trying the replace the nipples on, to no success./
These fit all but those three spokes.
What kind of shonky wheels do you have with a mix of spokes!
Blame Specialized...and Forestry Commission who were previous owners of the bike...

You're lucky they didn't leave a few spokes out as a fire break ๐
