[Closed] What shock for Enduro29?

[#6566204]

After a new shock for my Enduro. Needs to be Enduro 29 specific due to the shock mounting.

Can get a new ROckshox Monarch RC3 Debonair one from Fisher for sub £250.

Cane Creek would have to come from Tftuned due to the mounting,

OR Float X from Mojo for around £400.

Anyone had experience of any of these or could recommend me something different?

Thanks

Can creek spesh enduro option from chain reaction.

Can you send me a link to the monarch one, as I can't find the enduro specific one.

By the way why are you looking to change? I've fitted a volume spacer to the standard shock and it's much better now. I just miss the lock out for long fire road type climbs.

Do you mind me asking what happened to yours? I read on MTBR about spesh mounting destroying shocks.

Nothing wrong with nine other than one rebound setting being too fast and the other being too slow and also the fact that the climb isn't really a climb.

What size volume spacer are you running?

Have you spoken to anyone about getting it tuned (or if it might be even a warranty issue if not working correctly from new) rather than replaced?

Not yet, but would rather put £120 towards a new shock then getting this one sorted I think.

It works ok, but after riding an Inline on the same bike that was just amazing!

Have you seen the ohlins shock, I think it is compatable with the enduro frame supposedly the "ultimate shock "
for the bike

At the time I swapped the shock on mine, there was a lot of heresay around the CCDB not working particulary well on the E29. Maybe that's the case, as they do seem to come with the Inline instead now?

I had a Float X on mine - it worked really well with the frame/suspension.

Based on my experience with a Monarch Debonair, I wouldn't recommend one of those. Never seemed to work very well.

Only had mine for a couple of month, but just can't get the rear shock dialed in either. Can't seem to get it to use full travel (10mm short I reckon) despite taking as much air out as I can.

It also doesn't seem to offer much in the way of progression and is quite unpleasant on bigger hits, crashing through its travel with not much finesse.

Interesting to hear someone has fitted spacers and that helped.

Bear in mind the shock size is a 215x63mm but it is actually only a 57mm stroke so you will always have some spare shaft even when bottoming out.

Ah, that might explain it then! Thanks.

Still not massively keen on the way it performs but that might be a) I've taken too much air out now or b) the Pike upfront is so damned good it highlights the weaknesses of the Fox.

You arn't alone in those thoughts, the standard Fox (can't remember what model it was - CTD Performance model?) was turd on mine.

Bare in mind that the enduro 29 uses a shorter stroke @ 2.25 but still an eye to eye length of 8.5. There will always be a large part of the shock shaft showing at full travel.
Imo the ccdbaircs is the best shock to go for on this bike albeit slightly heavier than the competitors.
The base settings provided by spesh /cane Creek are garbage though. Dave at TF tuned
Has helped my with some new settings on all my db's which have been amazing.

One cool thing I've done is fit an offset bush and machined 10mm off the shock and proprietary mount resulting in 66 degree head angle. For me this is perfect. The thing rails and is much better on the steep stuff.

HobNob, yes, agree that the Fox model isn't the best. I think it is exacerbated somewhat as the bike is so capable, it's weaknesses are highlighted. I'm no pro, but as I get more used to the bike, even I can tell it isn't the best.

Maybe some spacers will help.

An offset bushing is next on the list for some added DH prowess.

a) I've taken too much air out now

probably this. I would reset the sag as recommended for the bike and go from there. You weigh what you weigh, so the "spring rate" should be set for your weight and you almost certainly was getting full travel. If you've dropped loads of air out and it's been bottoming harshly, I'd get the frame checked over as you may have damaged the shock mounts.

Something to bear in mind is if you do decide to go for a FloatX is you won't be able to use an offset bush, as the head of the shock is lot bigger than the other Fox model & only just fits in the frame - the offset bush causes it to foul on X brace bit.

The monarch is probably the best air shock for the enduro.
Ohlins TTX if you want the best shock.
