Just started using a 2x10 setup (36/22 front, 12-36 cassette) on my trail bike. Finding the jump down from the 36 to 22 is quite awkward to manage with lots of associated shifting on the rear required to find a sensible gear.
Just wondered what front rings you run with a 12-36 cassette? Tempted to run a bigger small ring, or maybe a cassette with a narrower range (got an 11-32 I could try). I may have to knock up a gear ratio spreadsheet, that'll be a fun evening for mrs blobby ๐
29/42 with an 11-27 cassette for XC and an 12-32 for AM.
On 9 speed 11-32 cassette, I'm running 26/38. If I had a 12-36, I'd probably run 28/40 to 30/42
Thanks. I was thinking 26, but 28 or 30 sound reasonable (the 22-36 ratio is quite ridiculous unless riding vertical cliff faces) I shall plug those into my geeky spreadsheet and see what that gives me. If going bigger than 26 I'm guessing I'll likely be wanting to up my big ring too.
With a 28 or 30, do you tend to spend more time in the little ring than the big ring?
I'm beginning to think I'd be better of with a compromise single ring up front.
I found 11/34 and 24/36 pretty good.
11/34 22/36 for me. Use it as a low and high range - don't be shifting at the front apart front at the bottom of big climbs. You can set it up to use 6 or 7 gears in the granny ring. I will only shift the front a couple of times in a 30+ mile circuit.
ditch the granny ring. get a 34t middle + chain guide.
you'll still get more than a 1:1 ratio - anything slower than that and you may as well walk.
if you run out of gears, you're going too fast (or down a road)..
IMO of course ๐
TJ, maybe I need to work on planning ahead a bit more. Definitely used the front as a low/high range thing using middle and big on my 3x9. Find the 22 is just too low.

I am going that way as when riding 3x9 the middle ring does do me for most of every ride. Maybe I need a single ring that's slightly bigger than middle so as not to spin out, and just MTFU on the ups.
... come to think of it, other than when on roads, I only really use the big ring on 3x9 to stop the chain flapping around too much.
Maybe a 34t middle and chain guide is the way to go. Hmmmm.
