If you're not worried about weight and tend to hit things hard then you can't go wrong with the old mavic 219/321. they are cheap, strong, take a 2.3 + tyre, convert to ghetto tubeless and they are cheap.

If you want something lighter then 719's are also very good but the price goes up a chuck, lighter again with the 717, a very good rim but if you are a big chap then maybe a 719.

Me, i'm running all of the above. As for DT i've seen to many get dinged too easily.

I've given my 717s quite a battering and they're still perfect after years of (ab)use.

I think the which rim question is a bit like the why buy anything other than Shimano one. There's a reason that 717s have become the reference - sure, you can try something else, but why?

I run 717s but my kid brother runs 719s with complete disregard for their safety and they still run true.

I found Olympics are far more impressive than 717s, which I found to be prone to denting as well as being heavy. I'd look at ZTR 355s for all round trail use.

another vote for 317/717, thousands of happy miles out of all the ones I've used with never a squeek

I had 717 and they were great, ended up on my mrs bike and I went for 719 as they are a little wider and give tyres a better shape I think. Depends what size tyres you want to run really.

i dunno who big Al is , he sounds big, and scary, but ill risk it for a biscuit: 95% of a wheels strength is in the build.

ive battered the bejesus out of 2 pairs of 717s, and never had an issue.
all still perfectly true.

Big al is a wheelbuilder of much repute. He also talks too much and makes his customers make their own tea. The bastard!
A quick visit usually means losing the best past of a day.

Olympics are great as long as you don't ding them (or you end up with oval wheels or splits)- so if you don't want to run under 30psi that's fine.

i run 321 and dt 5.1 both sound nice and strong and ride pretty light. I had stans olympics before them tho on the light bike and had no issues with them

Hope Hoops: Stans 355 or Stans Flow...iirc the Flow rim is only 10g heavier than a 719 rim but wider and arguably stronger.

Personally I'm running a 355 on the front of my PA with a 2.35 Highroller (with inner tube)and Pikes and its taken everything I can throw at it. Got mine from Wheelpro...Roger checks them over, fits yellow tape and a valve.
