For those with mortal legs
what to be able to off road with road bits inbetween
42x18 here - spins along the road at 20mph, copes with most off-roady bridleway stuff - managed about 15 miles of SDW on it
Exactly what I was going to say.
I run 41x16 on a Soul with 700C wheels and 35C CX tyres. Its my "mixed surface" commuter.
42:16 for the road, 42:21 for hill climbing. I'd say 42:18 looks about right. For road duties, I struggled at 20 mph on 42:21, and going downhill feels "dicey"
39:16 here on my sscx but its a pita on the road so maybe a 15 would be better
honestly? the 2:1 ratio will never fail you, i can happily keep up with the group on the geared clown wheel bikes, yet when it comes to a hill you'll never have a problem.. its better for your joints too (if thats a concern)
2:1 fixed downhill on a road... Try riding that at 30mph ๐
42:18 is perfect for my "mixed" terrain commute on a CX bike... Use a 48:18 on the single speed road bike.
39:20 here for hilly South Downs action at this time of year, drop to 39:19/18 for flatter work or racin'

About 64''
Same as my age!
42-18 I'd say is pretty big for anything which involves too much off-road. Hell I ride 42-17 fixed on the road. I like 38-18 or 36-16 on my sscx. That sees a bit of road work as well but I don't need to kill myself...
