Building up new Road bike for all round duty that has mudguard mounts. Last set I got were SKS Longboards and they got a bit battered in the garage by kids bikes whacking them in the garage.

Looking for recommendations?

If you can't stop them getting beaten up in the garage then you need a pair which can get beaten up but still hold their shape enough to work, which would be SKS or Tortec chromoplastics ๐Ÿ™‚

I've got some Tortec chromoplastics, and just received some of these SKS Bluemels from Decathlon from a PSA on here last week.

They're very similar, a pain to fit, but once mounted correctly just work. At the current price the Bluemels are great value.

Thanks all. It's a shame that the Decathlon offer is for 42mm wide mudguards, I need ones for 25-28mm tyres.

Have Bluemels replaced the Chromoplastics of old then?

I know 42mm seems wide but 25-28mm tyres fall comforatbly within the recommended range

I also run 28mm tyres with the 42mm guards.

I recently bought some 35mm Vittoria Hyper Voyagers and they only just fit under the guards! Clearance is so tight on my frame with 35's and guards that I am not sure I will keep them yet, I've put the 28mm's back on for now.

Tortec have been more robust than sks P35s. The sks fittings are still being used, but I snapped two rear sks guards. I'm running some sks commuters on the winter road bike. A bit short but they've stood up well. Waiting for more carbon stock.

Oh well may even double update with pictures. They will be going on this frame when I have everything I need to build it up and some time.

That is lovely. Finish it!

No chain stay bridge means securing the mudguard is a bodge. A useful tip is to buy a Cateye large rear reflector mount for the seat tube, mount it just above the bottom bracket and secure the guard to that. Specialised Langster owners will be familiar with this tip.

They've done both for a while.
The Bluemels are round in section, without the flat centre - you can sometimes get a bit more clearance, bike depending.
They are also actually black, not brown, like the Chromoplastics.
๐Ÿ˜

The Bluemels used to come with cheaper non stainless fittings, not sure if they still do.

There seems to be an almost infinite variety of SKS guards and bodges to make them fit.
Neither of the newish sets we've got bear much relation to anything on the SKS website, for instance.

@TiRed I have a Langster in the garage and some fangled mudguard adaptor fashioned from a light bracket that replaces the chainstay Bridge mount.

Just waiting for some helicopter tape to keep it looking tidy when lent against Sheffield stands.

Just bought some bluemels 42mm from Decathlon for 13 quid in the sale. Seem very well made, nice shiny black but not fitted yet. Using with 35c slicks

Stainless fittings AFAIK (they are listed as 3mm stainless stays and certainly look that way)

Tight squeeze with the mudguards but got there in the end. Ready for a Monday morning windy thrash to work.

Monday morning was damp and spotting with rain but the nice long wide mudguards kept me drier than the clip on Raceblade types on my old commuter.

That bike is lovely.
Good fit too.
I really can't be arsed with fitting guards myself, it drives me to tears of futility and rage.

Should learn.

๐Ÿ™‚

MR, that is a genuine bargain.
Much nicer looking than the CP's I reckon.

+1 but life's too short and the guys in the bike shop seem to perversely enjoy it.

Sweet ride Tomaso.

They're actually 37mm! I use them with 45mm sks guards and I wouldn't want to go any smaller.

Anyone tried metal guards?

Wonder how they compare in long term use.

To me, it seems inevitable that guards get damaged over time, I see the plastic ones almost as a consumables.

Be interesting to know if the cost benefit is worth it.

I noticed the box said 37 when they arrived. They catch on the guard bolts in my frame so I have removed them. I wish I bought the 32s now.

TBH I've always felt like the destructibleness of plastic could be a good thing in a crash or if they come loose. But it's a balance, every sks guard I've had has broken at the point where the mountings attach, that gets old.

SKS bluemels here, LBS fit them on 27mm tyres and did the job on Saturday when it was pretty wet.

I trim the wire stays with bolt croppers to save taking them off to trim with a hacksaw.
As for nice comments about the bike, it was mostly thanks to Ped off here who looked after it before I bought it this month.
