[#3595923]

New a new set of UST tyres for the crappy conditions we have at the moment and what will probably be the next few months.

Looking for a UST Mud Tyres for my Orange 5, ideally around 2.3 but could go to 2.5. Really like Maxxis, so if anyone has any thoughts on the Medusa or if there are any Conti's that I should be looking at.

Currently have High Roller and they are just not cutting the mustard

Muddy Mary's are quite good 2.35, but they do drag - I have the Vertstar.

They run well tubeless.

They make a bigger one but I wouldn't bother for general xc.

Not a rubber queen.

Swamp things are v good in the mud [but not much else], but the ust seems only available in 2.5 which is quite hefty.

I've been using the Medusas in LUST for the last two winters. They are very good intermediate tyre. They don't do that well in knee deep slop but they are better over roots and rocks than the high knob tyres such as the Swamp Things for example. My theory is that I would rather stack on deep soft mud than pointy rocks or roots and most of my rides are not purely in knee deep slop anyway (this year is the execption 🙁 ). They roll pretty well and I find tend to cope with hardpack too when things get a bit drier in early spring

Do the Medusa's come up small at 2.1? Was looking for something a bit beeffier for the peaks and the odd downhill event that I'm gonna enter this winter.

I've found the Medusas a bit twitchy a times when it's dried out i.e late winter/early spring. Otherwise fine.

maybe it's just me

They are pretty narrow compared to a 2.1 Nobby Nic for example. Not what I would use for full on downhilling. But the sidewally are tough which would make them OK for the peaks I would have thought. A friend of mine is using the Conti Mountain King this winter in 2.3 (I think). He was raving about them last time I went out with him and they seemed to stick like a limpet over the rocks and roots we were riding over on that extremely wet ride.

Is there much difference between the High Roller and Mountain King?

Usual answer is Mud X but they're a bit narrow for your needs. Conti Mud King?

Right decided, I'm gonna try some Mountain King 2's in 2.4, looks like the tread is a bit more open than the High Roller, so will give them a try.

Bugger, just need to find somewhere who have them in stock

Just to throw a wobbly ball in I might suggest a Hans Dampf.
Works fantastic in Mendip schlock, rocks and roots. Great all round winter tyre

A pair of the MKII UST 2.4 will be just under £70 with the current deal on merlin and in stock. The current MKII protection (TR not UST) fit my UST Mavic 819 rims really nicely. I ran them with tubes for the last 3 months with no punctures. They are much lighter than the full ust version.
