I've just came back from a few days glamping at GT. Midges aren't too bad other than last thing at night. It took and used some Jungle Formula which did the trick.

Avon Skin so Soft isn't a repellant. It only works as an oily barrier.
And Smidge also works for ticks. Less annoying but potentially more harmful than the humble midge.

But if the price bothers you then the active ingredient (Saltidin) can be found in several other repellants. But I can't vouch for any other differences - I stick with Smidge as it works.
The midges haven't been too bad here yet.
Smidge is top of the list though.

I've lived here for 20 years and have never once felt the need for midge spray, they simply aren't bad enough to worry about..

I didn't notice any midges last year.
None out on Thurs night at Inners. I think the very dry spring has meant there are fewer about just now.

The second half of August was horrific. I have a photo of my other half wearing a red top which was basically black because she was totally covered in them. That was round Loch Laggan. Glencoe was grim as usual and I have friends who went camping in the Cairngorms and spent the whole evening in their sleeping bags with midge nets on as their dog ripped a hole in the tent and the midges just poured in.
Smidge will generally stop them biting, and a head net stops them getting in your ears/eyes/nose etc.
Despite living in the WOS, the worst I have ever had was at Linn of Dee in the cairngorms.
Was hellish.

Every midge in the Highlands seemed to emerge at the same time last August. Up until then it had been pretty much midge-free.

I meant at the Tweedlove race (which is next weekend). Remember seeing vids from DH race at Fort William (which is this weekend), and the midges were swarming. Maybe they stay west until later in the year?
West coast can get them a month or two earlier than further east.
Smidge was 0% effective against the swarms at Ae this last couple of weeks. Absolutely horrendous.
Skin so soft works where all others have failed imho. May not be a repellant but presumably you want to avoid being bitten as number one priority. Has added advantage of making your skin silky soft and not smelling like a toilet.
Never ever had a problem with midgies in the Tweed Valley 😀
