[#11248833]

The 'oldest bit of kit' thread reminded me off my ancient icebreaker socks, still wearable but an unfashionable length and more darn than sock now.

They were brilliant kit for bikepacking or just long trips, just always comfier than synthetic alternatives, especially once soaked through.

Can't seem to find many tall merino socks now that aren't thick winter numbers, any recommendations?

Ta

Every time Planet X are doing a deal on merino socks I stock up. I quite like slightly thicker socks, and find them pretty much perfect especially for the £1.99 or thereabouts asking price.

The GripGrab Merino socks seem nice. Early days for me on them but the "Lightweight SL" are roughly the thickness of a Summer sock. They are definitely better than a regular sock when you get them soaked and aren't massively chunky like most merino socks. It depends how tall "tall" needs to be and they definitely aren't £1.99

They're really good, same thickness as 'normal' sock, much better than the P-X ones (which I used to be a big fan of)

I have lightweight Merino DHB socks which I wear all year round and I bought a pair of the winter weight ones for the Puffer this year. I really rate them both.

Thanks all, DHB seems like a good shout, although I also found some Argyle pattern Defeet Wooleators also which look pretty cool, I think Argyle patterns are de-rigeur for gravel and CX anyway? 🙂

+1 the PX/On One merino

I just bought some of these, which are comfy and seem well made. https://www.wiggle.co.uk/endura-baabaa-merino-stripe-cycling-sock-ii/

Thanks all, we might have a winner!

Browsing Planet X reminded me of the Argyle pattern socks I bought from them previously. I fancied something similar in Merino which brought me to Velovixen who sell Madison socks.

Huge range of patterns, lengths and blends.

Happy sock shopping 🙂

I've a pair of the Madison socks. They're well made and just the right mid calf height but they size up small. The pattern also makes them a little tight to get on but maybe they wouldn't be the case if I had bought a size bigger.

Nicest socks I've used of late are the Gore patterned ones, they're very thin but feel lovely on.

These https://www.wiggle.co.uk/gore-wear-c3-optiline-mid-socks/ but they're not merino (which I'm a huge fan of), £9 worth a punt?

I don't keep up with when Aldi and Lidl have their bike stuff so well these days, but ~5(?) years ago, Aldi did nice midweight merino socks, still in great condition.

Got loads of On One Thickies, must be 5-10 years old, surprisingly useable in warm weather and only now a few are ready to go to charity store's "rag man."

I bought a few pairs of the Madison Isoler yesterday afternoon off the back of this thread.. Pick the right colours and they're 4.99 a pair. They turned up this morning and seem very nice for the price. I'm size 44/45 and got the Large/ 43-45 size, and they're spot on for me.

Oi! How did you get yours before me? 😉

I have absolutely no fashion sense, am worried the bright Argyle patterns I ordered might clash with my bright blue Giro shoes.

It's hell riding with someone who looks like a Rapha poster boy at all times...

The answer to which sock is always Woolie Bookies, great in winter, great in summer, super comfy and last for ages.

Rats, socks just arrived, bit short though! Thankfully Freewheel have included a pre-printed returns label, couldn't be easier. Think I'll just pop those back and order some longer ones...
