yes - we are all 'tards

Speak for yourself. I was pure awesome yesterday.

I used my first aid kit again yesterday (girl in our group took the top of her finger off, it's now kept at the top of my 'pack it's used so often. I'm actually thinking of putting a tiny bottle of alcohol in there to clean cuts.

I think road kit is a bit different; I take-
Tube strapped to seat
Bottle in cage
In jersey;
Tiny pump
Two tyre levers
Keys
Wallet
Phone (in waterproof case so it doesn't get sweaty)

You haven't lived until you've walked a couple of hours (in cleats) to the nearest settlement, begged a loan of equipment from a hardware store or petrol station, then had to time-trial it back in terrible weather and failing daylight along grim and busy 20 miles of trunk road.

Minimalism helps create epics, discuss.

Minimalist means carrying everything one needs but nothing extraneous. See my list earlier

Just to help getting this onto page 8 "for the epic win", I may as well post what I have in my bag so someone can slag it off... 1 innertube, puncture kit, multi tool, chain tool, tyre levers, spare links of chain, food and my trusty dennis the menace pump. It all just about squeezes in.

IMO thats the sort of kit you need - not the kitchen sink and all

I would like to be able to fit a proper camera in, just got my compact in my pocket. another tube might be useful for longer rides as well but I don't do many of those.

How much kit you carry is really important.

It makes me cry, because it is so important

I remember biking over Helvellyn when I was about 17 and the only tools/spares I had fitted neatly into a bumbag (cos they were cool back then OK?). And also, CamelBaks hadn't been invented. Bottle of water and pump mounted onto the bike.

Can anyone explain why 3 l of water is needed for a ride of a few hours?

Never ridden in Utah have you? We got through 5L each on a 10 mile ride round Slickrock, most people still did the last couple of miles having run out of water...

Loving some of the replies to ths thread though! ๐Ÿ™‚

A meaningless distinction, surely everyone carries what they think they are going to need?

I think whats worse than carrying loads of kit everywhere you go is:

A: listing it all out.
B: taking a photograph of it all neatly lined up.
C: posting it on the Internet.

Although I was quite pleased the other day when I found a long forgotten rocky bar at the bottom of my pack.

Because I ride with numpties I tend to take spare kit for their geared freak bikes even though I ride SS. Is this acceptable or should I just carry what I need and leave broken down folk to the wolves & lynx ?

Most of us are riding around local to us.

Anyway that is one heck of a lot of water - I bet you peed most of it straight out again.

I thought about explaining my justification for doing that, then thought '**** it'
*shakes head in the general direction of this forum

It's joyous for me to be on a forum here in Spain where everyone rides with each other, the forum is a nice fun place to be and there aren't any sniping comments or cliques.

got bored of lists at page four.

for winter rides i find it difficult to fit all the essentials in anything smaller than a HAWG, i have tried, but its too much of a struggle.

tools - pump, tube, patch, multitool, chaintool, levers, bits of chain debris, tangfastics wrapper for emergency tyre boot, probably some laccy bands and a bit of leccy tape.
personal - phone, wallet, baccy, lighters, mp3, spare batteries
bike - lights, waterproof, spare layer
food - several large pieces of flapjack, bag of hairbo, hot chocolate (1.5L ish) hip flask whiskey or brandy (8oz)

That would be because some of your "essentials" aren't really.

If I'm riding with others, then I don't need to carry owt because they'll be carrying al the stuff I need. Senseless in schlepping round myself with all that weight.

All I need:
