I've struggled over the years, helmets are always tight "front to back" and way loose "side to side" - padding helps of course, but what helmets suit such a bonce - any advice ?

I have the same problem. No luck for me so far.
Based on the head moulds used, I'd suggest MET. Most other brands use a Northern European head mould (Giro, Bell, etc), while MET use a Southern European shape, which tends to be a little longer and narrower.
I had similar problems, the 2 best fitting lids I've ended up with are the Scott Stego and the Bell Super. The Scott is probably a slightly better fit but the Bell comes down lower so feels slightly more protective.
Best bet is to get out and try as many as you can.
Giro for my long head.
Giro for me too. Had a couple, best fit for my canoe noggin. I started the same post a couple of years back. was same conclusion then too 🙂
Giro here too. Same problem combined with v large head - so Giro might simply be bigger but the tightness on others for me is always front to back.
Giro and Cateye work for me. The Cateye can be tight if I haven't had a haircut recently.
Didn't get on with Met Helmets as they didn't pass the sitting in the shop test,I had a head in a vice feeling.
Fox flux is the only lid I've found that fits my long head. Tight and uncomfortable but I can get it on my head at least....
Edit: slight thread hijack, what fullfaces do you guys have? Havent found one that fits yet
Couldn't find a full face to get round this problem. The giro was nowhere near. Ended up with an old specialised but it's still too short.
bell super and urge down a matic for me. used to have fox flux. fits aren't grear but the best i can get!
My tsg superlight fits me like a glove.
My met is also a good fit.
Bell super is way too big side to side
Troy lee a1 fits but is depressingly expensive
My old giro is good but I've not tried a modern one.
Bluegrass goldeneye also a good fit.
