As title says, recommendations for the correct type of grease to use, or ones to avoid.

I use a standard Lithium Grease from Halfrauds. Never had any issues.

Most really. I use Rock n Roll Red Devil, it's a good alreound grease, easy to see if it's contaminated and really sticky

Nice thick waterproof grease (not bike specific), waterproof (obviously), nice and thick to hold your balls in (ooh err missus) during assembly, and lasts ages.

Something quite thick. I'd recommend against the white lithium stuff (like the kind that comes with Weldtite bearings) as it's too thin and will easily be washed/spun out. Pedro's Syn grease and Rock n Roll Red are good, although they're expensive. You can pick up a 500ml tub of Silkolene Pro RG2 for a tenner.

For me, I use silkoline rg2 on most stuff.

The Shimano green flourecent stuff takes some beating, I've tried Finishline, RG2 & Weldtite in the past but the Shimano stuff seems to be more water repellant.

might be a daft question but cup and cone relatively straightforward to sort yourself? wouldn't put a headset in myself but done most other bits on the bike (with varying degrees of success) Never tried to sort my shimano hubs but tempted to save some pennies

It's simple in theory, much like a headset, but it can take a little fettling to get your technique right. Much depends on your mechanical sympathy, I suppose. Take a look at this guide I wrote.

I used to use Castrol CL grease and found it held up against breaking down in bad weather much better than the recommended biking greases:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_173851_langId_-1_categoryId_165705

as it says

lovely and gloopy to apply as well.

didn't notice my paste was wrong - it says:

natural resistance to water and good protection against corrosion

saw loads of it in Bermuda garages as people are using it on boats in salt water, and loads of LPS3 as well, which is great stuff.
