After an aborted attempt to ride a route in the Brecon Beacons this weekend due to stop/start navigation and missing some vital turns on the trail which resulted in extra mileage and climbing to get back to the right point I've decided I'm in the market for a GPS device.
This would only be for riding new and unfamiliar routes the first time as a backup to an OS Map (for which I didn't have one this weekend, or a trail description, just a basic print out, hence the calamity).
So which GPS device? I started looking at the Garmin Edge 200 but from what I can gather this does not allow you to import GPX files/maps for you to follow. Which is an obvious requirement.
Any recommendations?
If you want maps then edge 800 trail (comes with OS 1:50,000 mapping for the UK), the 500 and 200 only do breadcrumb trails which can be harder to follow especialy if there's anythign more complicated than a T-junction.
Thanks thisisnotaspoon. So I can upload a .gpx file to the Edge 800 and follow the route?
Basically I'm wanting the bike equivalent of an in-car sat nav. Especially for those first time rides and something that will tell me to take the next right, straight on for 2 miles, etc, etc.
If you want an actual OS map on a screen, a Garmin Edge 800 is probably best.
I used to use a 305. I tried to follow an uploaded route a couple of times and it was hopeless. Maybe it would have got better with practice, but you can't beat having a moving arrow on a scrolling map.

If you want/need field-replaceable batteries, then the Dakota is a good option. If not, then the Edge 800 is the one to go for imho. (I've got both)
