Sorry if this has been done to death, but I couldn't find anything useful on a quick search. I currently use Strava on my phone to log my road rides, but want a dedicated GPS device to allow me to see current speed, time etc while riding and save the phone battery in case of emergency. What do you use and how do you get on with it?
Also, I've seen that Garmin do sat-nav type things, are these any good and worth the extra cost or are they a faf?
Thanks
I was going to get the Edge 800/810, but found the Touring did what I need (logging, occasional navigation) and was half the price. The 810 is probably good if you're a massive training nerd. There are other garmins without the mapping and navigation for less money, but the Touring's features are pretty useful for me.
I've got the 810. Very happy with it but I've not tried any others to compare. Lots of very very detailed reviews on here
I just got a Touring and with additional OS maps it's ideal for just riding / exploring if you're not interested in Ant+ units.
The Touring Plus has ANT I think.
Take a spare phone battery with you? Either a removeable one specific to your phone, or something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/TeckNet%C2%AE-External-Lightning-Sensation-Blackberry-black/dp/B000UH46YY
I've got an Edge 1000, which is basically an 810 on steroids. It's excellent, but probably overkill if you don't think you want one!

I want to be able to see current and average speed and the time while riding!
I used an eTrex H for a while.
Now replaced with a NoS VistaHCx for £60. Probably does what you want.

I've just looked at the Garmin Edge Touring Plus and the cheapest one I can find is £162.06 (RRP: £249.99) from bike-discount.de. I've used bike-discount.de before and was pleased, but is there any reason not to use them for this? Will it default to German or cause any issues with mapping (it has European mapping so won't be just Germany) and it comes with a USB charger so it won't be a German plug.
It's easy enough to set to English when you first power it up.
I expect it'll default to English anyway.
Bung a custom OSM map on it (which I think adds to whatever is there by default).
I honestly don't remember any consumer electronic device that I've bought in NL or DE that wasn't in english by default, and that includes several Garmins, several mobile phones, ...
Tempted to get an Edge Touring (plus or non-plus) for the road bike.
if that all you need just go for lower Garmin, like a 500. Will still have all the route mapping when you upload, just not much good for navigatingsee current speed, time etc while riding
Excuse me, but what's wrong with my suggestion of the eTrex range?
Cheaper, replaceable AA batteries, more capable etc etc.
Doesn't do maps but this is good value for a basic GPS unit

If you only want normal cycle computer capability plus being able to log ride and upload after, rather than plan and view route as you go along, then £60 for a Cateye Stealth 10 is by far the cheapest way of doing it. Personlly never got on with full blown GPS units when all I want is to analyse the route I have just done.

It's also bigger and heavier!
I'm not sure whether I'd use the mapping or not, but once I decide I think it'll probably be the Cateye for £50 or the Garmin Edge Touring for significantly more (I just need to make the right decision as I don't want to waste my money or buy twice)!
Fair enough. At least you said.
It does have a lot of other nice features though. But if you don´t need them I suppose there´s no reason to pay for them.
EDIT... 50g heavier! With a lot more features and replaceable batteries with longer battery life. I thought you wanted to not have to worry about the batteries.
I got my Touring Plus for £148 on Amazon, but looks like the price has gone up since 🙁
I've got an 800 for the bike which is brilliant if you want/need all the features. I also use a 310xt for running but can also do most of the bike stuff (just not navigation which I wanted)
I've just ordered a 210 for my wife which seems to do much if what the 310 does but for less cash and less bulk
