Grippy and XC sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Fatter tyres at lower pressures are more grippy, XC tyres are thin and need more pressure.

I like Maxxis Ignitors as they are a nice balance between low drag and grip but I run tubeless 2.35s at 22.5psi.

If your lady is light and rides light, try using lower pressures and see what she thinks.(?)

Verticals or XC Pros, they are popular and still made for a reason. Pair of Verts 20 quid.

Ignitors might be good - have one up front on my xc bike and like it.

Race kings are like velcro despite the way they look, but Ignitors if it's remotely rocky.

Bonty XR3 or 4's

XR4 2.2's are the best tyres I've ever used, have done brilliantly for me in Wales, Cannock Chase, Peaks or Lakes

+1 for 2.1" Fire XC Pros - I shall be going back to them when my current tyres wear out.

Anyone else find Bonty tyres a tad lethal on wet rock, incidentally? Don't remember the Fires I had on last year being anything like as skiddy.

LOL!

I'm enjoying my Bonty XR4 Team Issue 2.35's.

Roll well and loads of grip.

ratherbeintobago - I found exactly the opposite, altho might I suggest that braking on wet rock is gonna be a hairy exercise on any tyre

I concede that braking downhill on wet rock, like braking downhill on loose gravel, is always going to need bicycle clips. However, there are a few sett-paved farm tracks round here, and I swear the Bonty Mud Xs I've got on are much more likely to skite sideways than the Fire XCs. As tread shouldn't make much of a difference on that surface, I can only suppose it's something to do with compound?

I did want to like the Bontys more than I do, and had thought about giving XR4s a go, but I'm not sure now.

Andy

Another vote for nobby nics. Use one on the front all year round and switch between NN and RR on the rear.

I like Fire XC pros too. Have tried others but these seem to be the best all round XC tyre out there.

Nevegal. Well, they seem superfast compared with 2.4 Rubber Queens.

I agree, I have been using Panaracer Fire XC Pros now for three or four years, a great all round tyre. They last well, good resistance to punctures, handle well and good on the tarmac as well.

Another vote for XC Pros from me.

I run's 1.8 at quite high pressure and love them.
Tried a mix of Nobby Nic and Rocket Ron and quickly went back to skinny XC Pros!

Just put a WTB Weirwolf 2.3 on the front (the Advent was 'found-out' on a muddy night-ride), find out tomorrow how it is...

+1 for the Ignitors. Grip well on most stuff(even a long steep downhill made of mud and wet rocks). Do skip sideways on loose rocks, but digs in really quickly once it finds dirt.

i ran xc pro's for a few yrs on the hard tail and liked them, then picked up some cheap Nevegals from On One - much better all round IMO than the xc Pro's

Another ignitor fan here. Currently running 2.1s but I think I'll try the next size up if still available as exceptions.

I've been using a Schwalbe Albert on the front for the last year that seems good, and I see On-one have good prices on various Schwalbe tyres at at the moment so might be worth a look.

Ran one on the back of my full sus for about 3 months after buying cheap off on one. Quite simply the worst tyre I've ever used! Didn't grip in any conditions...

By contrast been using Bontrager XR4's a while now and they're awesome. A little big for a lot of frames even in 2.2 size, but they'll fit in most forks, hence I only run them on the front of my bikes, currently paired with 2.25 Maxxis Crossmarks out back. This current pairing is quite simply the best combo I think I've used as far as "XC" tyres go (ie. Not dual ply Maxxis) and will most likely replace with more of the same when they wear out...

+1 for Verticals. I ran them for a while and got on very well with them. For the price, you can try them and chuck them if you don't get on with them.

The other one to try is the Nevegals. My missus runs one on the front of her Rock Springs and reports that the front of the bike feels predictable and sure footed. She didn't get on well with the grip-slide-grip feel of the Minion that she'd been running beforehand.

They're draggy at the back though, so it's best paired with a shallower treaded tyre at the back.

i had nevegals last winter and nobby nic ... they pretty much wore out quick over the winter months.... 😥
now then heres one for you...few weeks ago on my local flee market i bought a pair 'michelin tyres'...grip looks good- quite nobbly really , only tried them out twice and they are quite good (think they are 9.99 each 'online' .,. i got two tyres for 8 quid (had only been ridden the once by the previous owner (i think he had got the wrong size ( i normally ride 26x 2.10 or 26x 2.2 but these michelin tyres are 26x 2.00 . yep they are thinner tyre and you can see the difference when they are on the bike..i dunno if they 'look' right on my bike...its like looking at them and thinking (nah they arent wide enuff), lol but to be honest they seem to run faster over the terrain tho sometimes i feel through the bike i mite need a slighlty wider tyre up front...for extra grip i guess...

Michelin Mud XC I think they're called are not a bad tyre and nice and narrow, just a bit heavy mind.

mboy - I'm pretty sure the Schwalbe Albert I've got says it's front specific - it's a 2.1, I think it was badged as little albert so maybe different but it was certainly an improvement over the WTB Nano raptors I had previously - they were light but otherwise appalling!

to inspire condifence for the wife

Was in the same position last year, partner had a nasty off and lost a lot of confidnce.

She settled on a Panaracer Cinder for the front which is grippy as hell, consistant tread pattern with no gaps but a bit draggy.

Currently has a Purgatory on the back, which has a very deep sidewall, can be run at relatively low pressures without pinching and is still very grippy.

Elaine anne, They are the old Orc compound which I found horrid on anything wet...

I would be looking for the evo triple nano or pacestar compounds for schwalbes if on wet roots... Check out on one

I think its because the carcass is ORC. RocketRons seem to have a reputation as very flimsy race tyres
