Hi
I'm 13 years old and looking for a full suss.i regularly ride red and black trails and also bit of downhill.i am looking for a bike second hand or new around £1000.please could anyone suggest a bike that is best for this budget and maybe for a smaller rider
Many thanks
I am looking at the rockrider 9.2 the boardman full suss.also ex demo trek remedys and orange fives.
Second hand probably best, 150 - 160mm travel, Spesh pitch, Nukeproof mega ..
So definitely go for a second hand bike
Pitch or enduro from spec
Reign or trance from giant.

Second hand, what ever fits and comes up at that price with the best kit on it.
There is a world of discussion around suspension systems and all that but when shopping on a budget skip that and learn as you go. Just make sure it has a tapered steerer and hope for a threaded BB for longevity and future proofing. If you are still growing then I'd be more concerned by the kit on it than the frame as there is a good chance you will be flogging the frame on as too small fairly soon.
Try and throw a leg over as many bikes as you can in the mean time so you get an idea of sizing. S/M/L means very little these days as a reference and the 16"/18" sizing relates more to HT's and roadies. It's got more to do with how long your arms & legs are in relation to your body size. for reach and things. You can correct a bit by moving the saddle and changing a stem but not much.
Ex demo stuff may come with some sort of warranty certainly better than just going second hand
Anything with an air shock will be easier to set up for your weight if you are a lighter rider
An orange five is a relatively safe bet if you can get an ex demo one in a size small go for it
Pitch or enduro from spec
Reign or trance from giant.

I think that's pretty much it. Just remember the Specialized Small is closer to a Giant medium. If you can get away with a small Specialized with a 30mm stem you'll have done great.
Ibis mojo hd
That's all you need
Opinions on treks bikes are they any good?

Based on the last 2 I had to fix I wouldn't touch them 🙂
Avoid anything with non standard rear shocks (not sure if trek have moved on, Scott certainly seem to have seen the light there) as especially used your over a barrel when it goes wrong.
Your 16yrs, better get off this forum asap as it's full of bearded 30s something plus keyboard warriors.
Haha
...and bell ends that can't tell a 3 from a 6.

My mate got his lad (same age as you) a S/H Enduro for about £600-700.
He was happy enough on that.
The 2003/4 were good solid XC/trail rides, the 2005 onwards were more trail/AM concentrated.
You can't go far wrong with one.
Giant Reign an option also.
Don't blow it all though, keep some for a shock/fork rebuild, & new frame bearings & it should serve you well.
Be honest with yourself here, if it's mainly reds and blacks and a bit of dh, you'll probably be better suited to a mid travel trail bike at your age - 130-140mm maybe, a full on dh or even an all mountain bike will be hard work to ride uphill when you're 'only' 13 years old. And as said above, fair chance you'll be outgrowing it and changing again, when you'll be a bit older, bigger and stronger and more able to make an informed choice.
So for your budget, it's compromise time - specification vs age vs condition being the main variables. You might pick up a low spec model new or close to new for that budget, and remember that it all wears out and if you have a decent frame you can upgrade stuff as it does. Or go for a better spc, but it'll likely be older and the kit more worn and need replacing sooner.
How tall are you? Paulscycles had a Trance X3 in M or L for 900 quid on their website if you aren't tichy, and Giants are great bikes with fantastic suspension systems. 'Only' 120mm but they always ride as if they have more suspension than the numbers suggest.
What about nukeproof bikes I've seen a lot of them at the Forest of Dean.it looks like there good for desests and climbs are they good for the money second hand.
Just don't get a commencal
Hey Ollie. Nobody has mentioned pivots. At 13, replacing 10 pivots on a giant is expensive. Go single pivot for low maintenece costs. Second hand build for sure. You could build a fantastic bike for a grand. Look up patriot66 on eBay. 150 quid for a frame, and very flexible. Set at 4" travel for xc with a 130 fork, or 7" with a big fork for your hols in the alps.
Why not a commencal
I know it has already been mentioned but air shock and forks is a must considering that you will be much lighter than the average rider.
What are your opinions on lapierre bikes such as the zesty and x flow 312
Snapierre.
Enough said.
I reckon 140 would be safe bet. If you dont do loads of DH and at 13 160 would be tough going up hill..but then again 13 you'll have much more stamina than us oldies!
£1000...2nd hand 2010 Giant Trance X, should be fully loaded for £1k or pick one up for £600-£700 sell the forks and a few other bits then you'll have £300 (plus what you've sold) to upgrade, put a nice set of 140mm forks.
A very good trail bike... But not just a trail bike...

When you say giant trance x is it just x or x0,x1,x2,x3 ect thanks
Spesh's are nice and cheap second hand, maybe a pitch if you can find one. Best bike they've ever made.

Well it's not a bad bike but hardly the best thing they've done.

turner flux
I have sold everything apart from
frame, fork, seatpost, stem, bars, chainset, rear & front mech
you'd need
wheels £100, rotors £15, tires £30 , chain £10 , gear shifters £40, cassette £20, saddle £20, pedals £20
I think you could do it easy with £1000....
I dont think you'll get better
My used Giant Trance cost me a smidge over £200. Ok, it a 2007 and came with some fairly cheap stuff, but it's great now it's been upgraded at minimal cost. It's unbelievable how cheap you can do your biking if you buy carefully ~ and my tatty old Trance keeps up with friends on six grand bikes, no problem and it's great fun to ride. I'd suggest asking a friend or club mate to help you trawl Pinkbike and Ebay if you're not sure what you're looking for.
Trance X is name of the frame, the X0, X1,X2, X3 etc indicates the build, giant made 4 or 5 different complete bikes the X0 was the top build, X4 the bottom. With the X4 you got Tora forks and a cheap giant shock, with the X0 decent Fox forks and a decent fox shock.
You can buy an X0 for £800-£900, an X3 probably £500ish, personally I'd buy a lower end one as the frame is the same (just ensure you get on with the Fox Shock) then you can upgrade, they came stock with a 120 fork but many say they ride better at 140mm.
Well it's not a bad bike but hardly the best thing they've done.
With the exception of the SX, I've pretty much ridden each model and the pitch is the only one I'd consider owning.

Ebay with a couple of days to go.....100% positive seller, and a bike that retailed at about £1200. Decent deal if the price doesn't go OTT.
