I use a bit of threaded bar, just because it's always in the corner of the garage. But it's maybe not ideal. No need to be choosy if you're careful

Bit of wooden dowel, cane or a stick from the garden?

Dowel well it's a bit of old curtain pole but it's just like a dowel. You know that bit of wood that you store just in case, this was one of them.

An old wooden spoon, with a plastic coated cup hook screwed into the end of the handle and closed to a ring with pliers, that I can loop the rag through so you can scrub a dub dub to get it properly cleaned.

I use a Dowel and have a cut sliced into the middle of one end about 2" long. I slide some kitchen roll into the cut and then spray the kitchen roll with disc brake cleaner.
