I think the old beasts I've got on are in the 170 - 175mm region after an inconclusive c-to-c measuring attempt (they are FSA sidewinders...) could I get away with new 170mm crank arms - what difference will 5 mill make?

it's personal. i will tell you that i don't like the 170's i have on one bike and that i can tell the difference.

others will tell you you won't notice the difference
sfb will be along to tell you he has an odd pair and can't feel the difference unless he tries really hard.

are the 170's cheap or something? just get 175's if not. imo

I am 6'4" and have just put 180's on after spending all my years on 175's and i can tell the difference, they are so much better. You need to set your bike up so the front of your knee goes through the peddal axle. I would think that 170's are a bit on the short side.

the only difference you feel is because the bike is in a slightly different gear now.

crank length changes of 5-10mm will make a difference on a singlespeed though

I am 187cm and use 180's on a geared bike and I can certainly tell the difference from 175's
