[#805912]

Building a bike to tackle a variety of things a Dialled PA with Pikes.

Not asure what brakes to get.. was thinking 160mm rotors though and possibly Magura (for German quality/easy to bleed ?)

My 160mm Hayes 9 HFX are pretty knackered, so I think I might offload 'em..

What do you recommend for mid range brakes?

Avid Elixir CR or R

CR are better, and are £200 on merlincycles for the pair with 160mm rotors, pre bled.

R are cheaper, not sure how much. Have a look on merlincycles.

Theyre great brakes.

The Merlin ones are 185mm front & 160mm rear.

Just got a set and fitted them today...coincidently on to a PA with Pikes 🙂

Shimano SLX or XT depending upon budget. Easy to bleed, use mineral oil instead of horrible, nasty DOT4 and just, well...work.

warranty on both is void unless you use V brakes

I have SLX but I am not sure if you know this already but you can probably put any disk brakes that fit a normal mountain bike onto the P.A. and it would still work.

Yeah was joking with that last post... in response to this

warranty on both is void unless you use V brakes

The rear disc on the PA has to 185mm max IIRC...

Anyways.. ive not bought brakes in awhile.. dont want to break the bank.. seems people so far are suggesting Avid and Shimano .. no shout for Magura or Hayes yet

Have a look at this thread if you're after a bit more comparison...

I like Magura brakes but IME they are a bugger to bleed.
(I also like Hope and Shimano and would probably like the others if I tried them)

SLX if you're on a budget, XT if you're flush.

SLX doesnt seem that cheap 80 quid a piece with no disc.. if i am interpretting correctly..

Seen Magura Julie HP 180mm front and 160mm rear for 120 squid... 5 year leakproof warranty for orig owner... just not sure it has enough power?
