I've got a fresh soul frame (26") on the way, the mk3 with the tapered head tube, but will need to run my straight 1 1/8" forks in it for the time being (despite the vile aesthetics).
So, what lower cup/bearings do I need? Cheap would be ok, as I will probably change to tapered steerer forks in the medium-long term.
Cheers
Sam
If you're planning on changing the fork in future, I'd go with a hope 'H' cup and HS136 adapter for the fork. In fact, that's exactly what I used to run on my soul.
Wot Dave sed.
Yep thats exactly what I have on my Soul at the moment to run straight steerer Rebas. These are getting a bit tired and will be replaced soon by some tapered Xfusions which will require a new crown race but nothing else.
Surely the crown race can simply swap onto the tapered fork?
Err,, no. The crown race I currently have enables me to fit a straight steerer in a tapered bearing cup. If I go for a tapered steerer fork I will need a larger internal diameter crown race to fit over the new larger steerer.
Its probably not the same Hope number as quoted by dave above.
Just checked the Hope website , it is the HS136 that I have
I had 1 on my old soul as well. You wouldn't know if the fork was tapered or not once in.
The Hope H cup comes with a split crown race. This is 1.5 inch diameter. The HS136 adapter fits a 1 1/8 diameter crown and steps up to the 1.5 inch split crown race.
So, on a straight steerer in an H cup you need the 136 adapter and the split crown race, and on a tapered steerer you just need the split crown race.
I have two forks that I occasionally swap on my Soul. I have an H lower cup, and when using the tapered Reba I simply put the crown race on that, and if I use the Thor 140 fork the split crown race simply levers off to be popped onto the HS136 adapter on the 1 1/8" Thor steerer. Or am I missing something?
