I've not ridden there since 2007 (and probably won't be riding there any time soon) but BITD hardtails with max 130mm travel fork, rigid single speeds and short travel full suspension bikes seemed to the 'the norm'. But when I see IG posts from time to time it looks like people are riding E-bikes and enduro-sleds. Is this actually the case? Are people banging out 10 minute laps of Follow The Dog?
That’s because backbones the day those bikes were fashionable where as now enduro and e bikes are fashionable. Short travel FS would be fastest in my opinion
I went round the Dog 2 weeks ago on my rigid 26" with slick tyres. Clearly I didnt die, and didnt even have any slides.
I'd do the Monkey on it too, but I dont bother with that now as there's far too much slow uphill bits, for short, not particularly interesting, downhill sections.
FS is not needed for any of the waymarked trails there.
Whilst a FS may not be needed, you're allowed to ride what ever bike you like, so what ever sized wheels, how ever many gears or what ever amount of travel suits you, go for it. It's all good.
Obviously e-bikes are evil though 😜
Longish travel HT is still probably ideal, short travel FS also good, it get choppy periodically before it gets resurfaced.
Obviously most people ride Enduro sleds or FS Ebikes so take your choice, not sure I’d fancy fully rigid although it’s definitely an option.

Fortunately, a pair of like-minded lads have taken it upon themselves to rid Cannock of the eBike curse...
XC race bike for a quick lap.
Trail HT for a fun lap.
FS for a comfortable lap.
take one of them bikes with 2 wheels, and tyres, you'll need tyres.
I thought the standard answer at Cannock as to what bike to take was anything you could pull of someone else's bike rack.
First off, it's important to know that the OP is quite a good rider. Now based in Squamish he's got a few KOMs down some scary stuff on his hardtail! I also remember one night at Stile Cop when folks were "sessioning" the big jump at the bottom. A couple of riders broke their bikes, Walleater landed silently every time.
Anyway, it's all rollable so something like a 26" Cotic Soul is still a lot of fun. Some of the cheeky is clearly made for bigger bikes: fine on my Giant Trance but on my hardtail you think you're going otb at every moment.
Actually, as I'm doing an hour a day (minimum) for July I might take my old Sun fixie (27 x 1 1/4", mudguards and panniers) round follow the dog this week.
Hardtail would be fine for most of it apart from the breaking bumps into all the hairpins where you will need at least 6" travel front and rear. They were brutal on Sunday when I went 😃
Over last nearly 30 years, I’ve ridden off-piste and the marked Dog and Monkey over there on a variety of bikes from relatively slack modern bikes - like my Patrol and Switchback, to the other end of the spectrum of rigid 29’er singlespeeds or retro hardtails. All work and just offer a different type of fun.

I was gonna say to just ride somewhere else instead, but it looks like you already are.
Keep on trolling though, it passes the time well enough.
😉
Pretty much anything - I've done it on my old 120 XC HT, 160 HC HT and 170 FS 'enduro sled'.
I've seen plenty of gravel/CX bikes on the 'Dog and I even followed someone on a shopping bike down High Voltage a couple of years back.....
someone on a shopping bike down High Voltage
That could have been me.
We got passed the other day at Cannock by a guy on an original white on one HT 26" style. Whether that says more about my speed than that's guy bike, I dunno 😂
LOL at BigJohn. I probably wouldn't even go off that drop in the light any more, let alone in the dark.
I'd say I'm roughly 32.56% trolling. I'm just interested to see what people ride on some of my old spots. I'd forgotten about gravel bikes (how could I forget? 😉 ). Plenty of fire / access roads, flowing trails, and potential for long loops so that could be kinda fun. Probably as fast as an E-bike and a 1/3rd of the weight!
I did it on my gravel bike a few months ago - the climbs were great as were the few smooth downhill sections. The brake bumps not so good.
Perfectly doable but my back hurt afterwards.
HT for me - but most seem to use full sussers. I'm new ... happy to take my time and pick my lines carefully... but also I really wanted a Cotic Soul.
I wouldn't really even consider taking anything bigger than my hardtail to cannock thesedays. Keeps most of the stuff fun and some challenging. 140mm front end for reference
180mm ultra high powered derestricted E-sled, lowered Boxxers or 40s, front and rear mudguards, quadlock with Ipad on bars to see what the go pro on your chest is recording, fullface, puffer jacket.

Not unless you were in drag......
Greetings Scruff. One of these sounds perfect then!

Purpose built for riding up the Stile Cop Red Course on a Sunday afternoon.
And a drone don't forget the drone who leaves the house without one.
Not funny Will, they are actually a bit of a problem.
Haven’t you got some drainage to fix or some moss to buff?
If I try and buff anything at the moment I'll set it on fire. Those things seem like a double edged sword. People around here use them for trail building access and I almost want one. Almost... I can imagine they are a Chav's dirt bike for the 21st century though.
