Pook - go down to Decathlon for some usual bargains (Rockrider '5' was/is @ £350 with hydraulic brakes, Sram 5.0 and Suntour Forks)

Or, go second hand as there are some great bargains to be had.

Wiggle have £100 off a 2008 Charge Duster rigid which looks quite nice. It's about £50 over budget and probably not the best specced bike for the money but would be a good frame for upgrading (I assume it's the same frame that appears on the £1000+ Duster Hi). They only have small though and I'm not sure how that fits in with 16".

Go second hand, pick up a decent spec hardtrail. Trek, Spech, DMR, Charge, On-One. Just look around on classifieds and evil bay.
