Don't want to spend a fortune, and I've been quoted by LBS that I need 6 x bearings that are £10-15 each. Anywhere that I can get them cheaper?

i replaced bearings front and rear bearings with kits from merlin. think it was about £40 for the 7 bearings. (5 in rear 2 in front). New hope hub is on its way in the new year, maybe better to wait and see if the improved bearings from the new hubs will fit the pro2

Ok so the way I'm seeing it, I can buy this

http://www.onlinebearings.co.uk/hope-pro-2-hub-bearings-pr-16472.html

Will do the entire rear hub for £18.75

Or I can buy the proper hope ones for £24.95 here

http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop/Wheels/Wheel+Accessories/Wheel+Spares/Hope+Pro+II+Bearing+Kit+Rear_2409.htm

Or the bike shop can get them for me for £60-90? Ok the internet is usually cheaper, but that's a lot. What's the difference?

Personally, I've found that unless you've got a mate in the trade, it's hard to beat the hope bearings for a balance between cost and quality. The ina bearings that hope use are good quality. You can buy cheaper buy I find they really don't last.

seconded.
Are your lbs fitting them for you?
If you can get them out, then you can put new ones in - any bearing supplier will do them.

I've been wrestling with the freehub trying to get it off for a few days now, its not budging. I at my wits end, and called up the bike shop saying I'd probably dump it in there. They told me it would be madness to take the hub apart and not replace the bearings, and then said the bearings would cost bucket loads. If I'm going to get them to take the freehub off, I might as well get them to do the whole job, they only charge £9 for labour.

So are they going to sell me the same bearings with a massive mark up, or gold and diamond centred ones?

Take the non drive side spacer/end cap off and tap the end of the axle with a mallet.

Reatila for all 7 bearings good quality will not be far off £60 I would have thought. they are stock sizes so available from anywhere.

Unless the bearings have failed tho there is no need to change them. I did just the freehub bearings in mine recently

Freehub bearings wear twice as quick as the others IME.
Gresae the outer face liberally.

A flat rate of £9 for labour? No wonder they charge £60 for bearings 😆

Freehub body removal.

I get my bearings from either SKF or INA or one of INA's subcontractors, they are indentical in every way to INA including materials used, tolerances and seals.

That said I'm not paying INA just to fondle the bearings or to wrap them up, since I have to unwrap them again to weather proof them, it doesn't make ant sense.

I have bearings, I am selling them but I don't really want to talk about them. I am 13 days into my 15 day drink binge and thoroughly enjoying myself.

As for all the people that are running my bearings thank you and don't worry they will last ages, as for all the people who are not! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

What is SKF, INA, etc.?

So will your bearings last longer? How much do they cost?

SKF, INA, FAG are well known and reputable bearing brands, just like Endura/Gore/Altura. Anything branded by one of these makes (and others) should IME be a decent bearing, anything non-branded tend to be chinese rubbish that don't last.
As mentioned above Hope bearing kits are actually "INA" bearings, my Local bearing shop sell INA bearing for around £8 each.
Those online bearing kits seem a bargain but I can't see a mention of a brand of bearing, this would make me suspicious as other MTB kits they sell are identifiably SKF bearings.
