My stepson is in the market for a bike for commuting. Distance will vary from 1-10km each way, at least five days a week plus it would be handy if it was unattractive enough to be left outside the co-op or pub when required.
Looking for the lightest, tightest, cheapest most reliable commuting bike
What does STW currently recommend?
No BSO's, no looks-like-full-suspension. How cheap can i go off the peg (2nd hand, classified build is an other option)
edinburgh bike co-op normally have some good deals.

Try your LBS, they may just be able to help.
Halycon Yukon - £300 here.
Hub gears and drum brakes are the way to go for commuting. Not light but this bike will be very reliable and still doing sterling service into the next decade.
