Hi
I'm considering taking the plunge into 29er world and was hoping for some suggestions on which bike for around a grand. I will be using for mainly bridleway/trail centres so would like something with a front suspension and reasonably light.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated:)
You could do worse than the On-One Whippet at £700 on the classifieds. If I didn't have me Salsa, I might be tempted myself.
Oh yes....The Salsa El-Mariachi of course. Mines NOT for sale LOL.
Depends. 🙂
If you're used to building up bikes from parts yourself, you can assemble a very nice singlespeed around the On-One Scandal v2, which is £149 on't site at the moment. CRC are doing a pair of 29er Rebas for £350, scout out a pair of Hope Hoops for £260, and you're on your way. That leaves you £250 to spend on brakes (modern Deores - £80 the pair) and finishing kit. I had random garage spares, so got mine put together for about a grand (Deore cranks - £45 for the lot including BB - sell the rings and buy a singlespeed ring), and I'm more than happy with it. If you can move mechs, cassette etc over from another bike, should be doable.
Good luck. I did this because I didn't want to take shortcuts on the kit I bought - figuring I might want to move to a fancier frame at some point - but you can get a brilliant Specialized Carve or similar for a grand.
The canyon is the default answer...
The Salsa looks nice so need to check that out in further detail.
I've been looking at both on one and canyon and it seems that the canyons offer a better spec for the money but i may have to wait 10 weeks to get one in my size!!
To be fair the El Mar is steel and will be heavier and you won't get a new one for a grand unluess it's a special offer.
Realistically for new at £1000, you're prob looking at the scandium On-One (Scandal) - you'll prob get Rebas and SLX which would be a good package for a grand these days.
If it turns out the aluminium rides a little too stiff you can always swap out to a Cotic/Singular/Salsa steel frame later. I saw some real bargain El Mar frames at Triton Cycles recently.
A few years back I bought an Orange P7 which was a fantastic package. At the same time I bought a Cotic Soul frame for Cy. I sold the P7 frame for an excellent price. I ended up with the exact Cotic build I'd wanted and saved £250 on the cost of building it from scratch.
What size Canyon do you need? All of the Grand Canyon 7.9s are showing as available within 2-4 weeks (apart from small).
If you can stretch to 1300 then go Canyon 8.9 or Kona's Big Kahuna looks like a corker.
Or pre-built On-One.
I bought a scandal 29er complete bike off here 3 months ago. I ride it every day & haven't ridden any of my other bikes so am more than happy.
A few things have been swapped out but at second hand prices you have that option.
I'm after a small and they're no stock at on one and a 10 week wait at canyon!!
What's the verdict on the cube race ltd 29ers and the comeback supernormal 29ers?
Mates got a 1k Cube (can't remember the exact model) and it seems a great bike. Great spec, looks good, not overly heavy. You can't go wrong really.
On One Scandal 29er is currently £799 complete, but 16" are out of stock. Bargain though I reckon.
Yeah I think the scandal is well worth the money.
I meant commencal supernormal above, not comeback. Damn you predictive text!!!
Can I suggest the Whyte 629, maybe not the bargain that the On-one or Canyon is, but very sorted geo IMO of course.
I'm selling a small sized Scandal 29er, Jim. Have a look here. I've just put it up for sale. I'm in Yorkshire but can post it.
