[#2895825]

Looking for a small framed 24" wheel bike. son is starting to outgrow his 20" wheel, so needs to be quite small. They all seem to have front gears too, don't reckon they are necessary yet, so if there's abike out there without. Then well and good. Any suggestions?

dunno but What-MTB have a children mtb-ing guide this month, maybe worth a read, though it'sbeen slagged on another thread here for being totally useless (as in "why write one?").... hmmm so what would they make of this thread?

I have both a hot rock a1 fs and a a1 fsr (well not me, my boys that is) and the full Susser (fsr) comes up quite a bit smaller, especially fr stand over height. The a1 fs is a 13.5 inch frame I think and the fsr a 12".

The stem fitted on both could be changed for a shorter one, which helped my youngest fit on it.

The fsr is newer, but still comes fitted with rst forks that actually work, unlike the sr sun tour ones fitted to the fs.

Both are nice little bikes and much better than the standard hot rock bikes I think.

I may be selling our a1 fs soon,as we are building my oldest a 26" bike, this is the 13.5 Inch frame though.

You are always welcome fit your little one on both our bikes and se wha you think, we are I norwich. Most shops don't stock the more expensive hotrocks....

Hope that helps.

Simone

We have an Apollo XC.24 coming up for sale. Two years old, gears (but you could disable them?), 12" frame. Brakes upgrade to Deore/cartridge pads/XTR cables. Looking to clear £50.

Isla.? My daughter has had one for the last 18 months and it's a really nice kids bike. Light and quality. Would recommend to anyone but this years price maybe an issue. Or maybe not. Resale value is quite good as well.

I'm in the same situation with my eldest daughter who's pretty much 5' and outgrown her 20" bike.
I'm not too keen on getting a 24" wheeled bike as she seems to be growing quickly and would be OK on a 26" wheel by the end of the year.
She's not hugely into off-roading, but will do a bit if required, and 90% of the riding will be on roads/firetrails.
To this end I'm thinking that maybe something simple and light with a rigid fork would be good, maybe a small pompino or a 14" inbred with hub gears could be quite cool.

Check out the carrera blast 24 in halfords. Nice bike with cable discs for extra playground posing power. Got my lad one for Xmas. Agree front mech is a waste of time. Too stiff for little hands to use. Cable discs now replaced with parts bin juicy 3s though as they were sh1te.!!!
Isla don't do a 24" wheeled bike but their 26" wheel offering fits kids same size. Neighbours lad has one and it is very light compared to the carrera as it has rigid forks v brakes and single ring. £100 more though.
Isla is the better bike but 9 yr olds prefer shocks etc.

My current kids fleet is a steel Spesh Hotrock in purple with butterfly print, a Trek MT220 and a Scott Voltage Jr, all 24" wheelers, for 14, 9 and 11 year old respectively. As a bike, I think all three would grab the Scott first, definitely the most fun and most appealing. Fairly flat here so the front gears are rarely shifted. The steel Spesh is far too heavy for what it is.

Cannot fault Decathlon bikes for the money.
I have had 3 in various sizes for my daughter and all seem well made and decently specced for the money.
What about this, has front shock(not really needed but kids will love it)rear gears only

That BTwin does look good, especially for its price

A used Kona Hula? Great bike that will hold its value. Other offerings from Trek and Specialized are of similar quality and well-suited to singletrack. All have multiple front rings, but I've not found this to be a problem (up/flat/down).

Islabikes are nice too. Lots of people on here like them. That Btwin will certainly be good value for a new bike.

I'm not too keen on getting a 24" wheeled bike as she seems to be growing quickly and would be OK on a 26" wheel by the end of the year.

Is that the same for clothes and shoes? 😉 At five foot nothing, a 14" frame 26" bike should be fine to be honest. There isn't a lot of difference in standover and reach (we have both).

How tall is your son? I'd say the hotrock a1 fs will fit from around 130 ish!?
