[#1581492]

I just found myself weighing stems and bars on the wife's kitchen scales.

Is there any hope for me?

Alex

Of course, your not a weight-weenie until you've bought scales specifically for weighing bike bits.

Could be worse, you could have a spreadsheet listing the weights of known components and their cost so you can find the lightest setup for your money.

Of course, only a mad eejit would do that.

I agree, never seen the need for the spreadsheet, a true weight weenie just knows what everything weighs and what other options are out there ๐Ÿ™‚

You'll be fine. Just step away from the scales. . . . .

Never saw the point of weight weenie-ism. Being slightly porky myself I value robustness too much; in any case it strikes me as daft to spend vast sums to reduce the weight of bike+rider by less than could be achieved by having a big dump.

Is that not why you don't 'get it' then? I've never broken any lightweight kit, so I'll continue to use it!

Having a dump then getting on a lighter bike makes even more difference.

I just fitted some new stuff and lost 287g (that's over half a pound!). Then Mrs OWG noticed that her scales were missing and deduced that I'd been buying new bits - now I'm in trouble.

Well I have scales and a spreadsheet but my only bike is a 32lb hardtail, what does that make me? I'm so confused ๐Ÿ˜•

*holds hand up in a sheepish manner* erm.....weight weenie here as well although I'm now attending WWA (weight weenies anonymous) meetings regularly and can walk past a bike without wanting to strip it,just to weigh all the bits including the cable stops ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

still getting terribly excitable at the poshbikes carbon fibre reservoir caps for my xtr brakes though......oh poo

I love the weight weenies site but can only be bothered to check the weight of tyres.

I'd love a go on this just to see how much difference a truly light bike makes. 5878 gms or 13 lbs !

I don't think that it would. Most of the parts are reasonable, although carbon chainrings would worry me a lot!

I actually did buy the scales to weigh all my components as they were being transferred over to the new frame. I wanted to know what each part weighed so that when it comes time to upgrade I know what effect the upgrade will have. I'm not interest in my bike being super light but i don't want it to be a super pig either. Its actually went up about 2lbs since I first done it but might be taking my tires back down to 2.35's which should get it close to 30lbs again.

I'm happy to admit to being a weight weenie, and I wouldn't want to ride either of those bikes off-road (if the Litespeed's the one I think it is, it was being used for pretty much nothing but on-road commuting).

You know they're heavier than the plastic ones? Purely for pimp value. If you get them from Fiber Lyte you don't have to have the Posh Bikes writing on them and can choose your weave.

Agree the Scale and the Sewanee are crazy, impressive, but crazy!

I think the cheap seatpost I just bought off CRC for my new On One build weighs about the same as that entire Scott, up there.......

Maybe, but reliable is better. Who want to walk 4 hours to get back to the car because of a broken bike bit?

Or a train, or phone for a lift! But we don't do the 500 mile rides through the mountains that Juan does. We're just not hardcore enough!

I've never had any lightweight parts fail, in fact the only thing that's ever caused me to cut short a ride was a trashed XTR mech which also destroyed the chain!

I'm actually with juan here - one of the main reasons I'd not want one of those bikes up there. Like Nick though I ride light but reliable stuff (have had some light stuff which broke or didn't work properly, but that's all gone now).

You don't need that much, Just 40km will be enough, but you're right about the mountain part of it. We don't all ride around field like you do although, not at 35mph like you seems to do it.
