Noticed today in setting up ready for a ride tomorrow that my stanchions on my 2012 rebas have worn through the gold coating. Not particularly bothered as I am going to be selling them in september-ish and they have paid for themselves in usage really but basically, am I going to die if I keep using them?
I see plenty of people using worn stanchioned rockshox's so I don't think there will be any issues as there is no sticking or loss of travel.
Have you serviced them?
They have been serviced twice since new. About 6 months ago now.
Shouldn't be a problem but the wear will hit their resale value.
They'll be fine for a while yet - are they leaking oil?
Strangely my Reba's with worn stanctions are the most supple fork i own ( I've got 2 more sets of Reba's too )
It won't cause any immediate problems but you want to service them as it's likely there's something causing the accelerated wear. If they're only 2012s have you considered a warranty claim? They've not been serviced enough frankly so you probably have no right to anything but it can't hurt to try.
No leaking oil yet, resale value is annoying but not a huge issue. Ill just pull them apart as soon as I can and change the seals and oil then!
Northwind - I could but I don't want to be 'that guy', I know I've been hard on the components, not serviced it enough and I don't want to even try as I would be wasting their and my time (plus jts a boardman from halfords).
I use my worn Reba's as winter forks now , I don't look after them as much as I should and ride them solely in crap but they just keep soldiering on.
I serviced mine propperly too, bit they still wore. I can only assume that I should have changed the wiper seals sooner as dirt must have got past them
