Ive recently started to use White Lightening (clean variant) lube and overall it seems quite good, stays on in moderate wet and doesnt pick up grit and grime. However after last application and not using bike for a few days (stored inside the house so not cold) the chain was very stiff and hard to turn. Anyone else found this, am I putting on too much of the stuff making a solid wax ??
Mine does that if I put too much on and I don't turn the cranks a few times while it dries. Just put a little less on and turn the cranks a few times afterwards as it dries ๐ ?
Ditch the White Lightning, get some Squirt... worked beautifully all winter last year, no stiffening and super clean!
I use squirt and it's the best chainlube I've ever used by quite some way. It has saved me hours and hours of having to clean the chain and jockey wheels. And I use it on the cross bike so it copes with the worst of weather well. The only down side I've found is that it can freeze up in the very cold, but the chain hasn't stiffened in the way you describe.
I use squirt and have noticed the same problem. Only really when i apply it and then leave it in the garage for a few days. the stiffness goes after a little bit of riding. I suspect it is because i apply a bit too much and always forget to go and wipe off the excess.
UPDATE had another look at drivechain and stiffening was very bad; BUT then also disciovered that BB was on way to seizing up, so although WL has stiffened chain it thankfully was not nearly as awful as I thought, just a new BB required ๐
Yes, I've had this, I use Squirt and I put liberal amounts on each time it gets oiled...I've put it down to the excess lube drying hard and needing to 'free up' as the drivetrain turns...
+1 on the Squirt, excellent stuff, used it all CX season so far and its been a chain saver
