Next summer I'll be participating (note I'm not saying competing ๐ ) in a 2 day running/walking/orienteering event in the UK as half of a 2 man team and I thought that a good way to save weight would be to take a water filter that would allow me to drink from steams etc to suppement a 2l camelbak bladder. There will be water available at the overnight stop but, although clean, it won't be classed as potable.
Can the STW hive mind recommend me something to suit my needs that's light(ish), small(ish), and (with any luck) not too expensive. I've used the filter straws before and found them to be ok but I'd like to be able to filter water into a bottle if poss.
Thanks
Tablets would be lighter and (in a way) quicker. You can let them do their thing while you carry on moving. If solids are going to be an issue you can use all kinds of things to filter out the worst as the water goes into your bottle.
I've used an MSR Miniworks filter too, and it does produce nice tasting water but it is quite bulky and needs regular cleaning. e.g. in Wales I get about 2L of water before it really slows down and needs cleaning. Obviously, you can clean it while you're out, but it's extra hassle.
Thanks Aiden
I've used tablets in the past and not had any problems with them, I'm trying to avoid the chlorine taste if possible, could always take some SIS powder to camoflage that.
You can get neutralising tablets to remove the chlorine taste?
Iodine tablets are also sold. IMO opinion they taste better than chlorine just a bit metallic.
Katadyn used to do a 500ml sports bottle with a filter built in.
Whereabouts? Most running water in the mountains is perfectly OK to drink.
