[Closed] Washing On-One Merino

Got a couple of the new cheapy base layers, and the zipped sweater thing.

I know that 'value' merino can shrink if not treated right, so anyone got any tips before I get started?

Cheers,

APF

I know I do work for On-One... but I have washed 120g and 190g baselayers in the machine on 40 degrees normally with absolutely no problems. Have not tried the 250g heavy base layers but understand them to be OK too. Do not recommend machine washing the merino jerseys though- they can turn into kids sizes if you're unlucky!

Depends on your washing machine! I wash my merino at 40 degrees no problem however depends on the spin settings as that's the issue. I would start with a 30 degree wash or even hand wash as it won't take long.

Re Samuri's experience, is this an indication of the forthcoming takeover by On One of Felt 🙂

OK, so base layers fine in the machine, what about drying, radiator OK?

And the jersey, is that hand wash only?

Thanks,

APF

I wash all my merino in the washing machine, on wool wash, or at 40c @ low spin. As for drying, indoors on a clothes horse, as flat as possible. It might be worth hand washing the first time. If you’re unsure just hand wash & don’t forget most merino passes the 92 day test, so you don’t need to wash it as often, probably better for it as well.

I have the same zip up as Samuri (in retro green) and exactly the same thing has happened. The funny thing is just before I put it in I thought to myself "shall I check the label to see if it's OK at 40?" Maybe then I would've seen the hand wash only symbol.

Shame. I loved that top. It fits my girlfriend now and she quite likes it too.

How do the base layers size up? I'm around a 36/38 chest, do I go small and accept that the gut will be highlighted, or go medium and have it a little looser?

How on Earth does Merino not smell though, even without washing? How does that work?

Smell is caused by microbes feeding your sweat etc and I think something to do with Amonia from the Urea in your sweat.

Merino wool like a lot of natural fibres is naturally anti microbial. No microbes, no smell.

So is it some sort of chemical reaction then? Cos wool/hair is 'dead', so can't be a 'biological' reaction?

http://www.woolrevolution.com/virtues.html

Most synthetic fibers acutally increase body odor because they create a breeding ground for bacteria. Sweat itself has no odour, but over time bacteria develop and create unpleasant odours. Merino wool reduces the opportunity for odours to develop because it quickly absorbs sweat and evaporats it into the air. Unlike synthetic fabrics, wool does not retain odors and will freshen just from airing out. In addition, the outer layer of wool fibers have a high concentration of fatty acids, which have anti-bacterial properties. The internal layers of wool fiber actually bind with acidic, basic and sulphurous odours that are components of body odour.

Ordered friday, 2.45pm. Arrived saturday, 09.30am. Got an email this morning telling me it had been despatched 🙂

the "small" shortsleeve base is properly skintight, and very thin. It'll be an ideal baselayer. The half zip longsleeve medium is a really good fit and will do nicely for late summer evenings.

I have shrunk my zippered cardigan .
In an attempt to make it fit even my sculptered lean form i researched the www and had some partial success.

Wash your top in tepid water with a capfull of hair conditioner , and a capfull of clothing conditioner .

Rinse out with cold water .

Hang to dry on decent wooden hanger zipped up , over a towel.

Insert 2 x jars of jam in the side pockets and a 500ml bottle of beer in the middle one ( oh the irony)

Source from under the sink 2 trigger sprays, i believe glass cleaner or multi surface cleaner live in such a place.

Insert the 2 trigger sprays into the cuffs of the sleeves . Allow 30 + cm for stretching effect.

Allow 2 days hanging for best results . I cannot warrenty any results whatsoever , but if they have already shrunk you have nothing to loose
