[Closed] VPN Recommendation

I use https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ which is a paid service. Like it for one subscription giving me VPN on PC, phone and tablet. Had no problems with performance or setup.

For watching TV and stuff

I use WiTopia for about a decade. A paid service, works across all platforms and has been reliable through out.

I've used this service for years, but they broke something in their windows client about a year ago and have been unable to fix it.

Not everybody has the problem but I do. And it manifests as extreme packet loss under load. The Linux client is fine, the Android client is fine, the Mac client is fine, the iPad client is fine. The problem is only the Windows client.

So my advice is to get the one month option and test it for just a month with heavy loading, e.g. linux iso torrent files :), iPlayer in HD etc and check whether you're affected by the bug before committing to a years worth.

I use PIA - don't have the problems associated above (they have updated the client at least 3 or 4 times in the last 2 years). Very good. But they're so good and so cheap that they must be a front for the NSA/FBI/ whatevs - half joking.

I use Strong, now a word of warning ... increasingly tv streaming companies are blocking the IP addresses the VPN's use

You might like to look at Kovi software and/or m8s box

TorGuard user here - paid service and has iOS and OSX applications too. Following some issues at work, and seeing how one of our clients had their security setup means that we put the bulk of our home network traffic through it.

Why do you use VPNs?

I have a friend in USA who would still like to watch UK telly online but it's increasingly being blocked, is this something a VPN like the above would allow?

@bigjim yes primarily to watch uk streaming tv when I was living abroad - you sign in as a user from a UK server. Have him look at Kovi and the m8s streaming box too. Your friend shoukd try and get 1-month free so he can check it works, vpn servers increasingly being blocked too

Yeah, I have had to swap providers a few times this year, only pay for 1 month at a time. I use smart dns services rather than VPN, they are usually the same providers. It is netflix that is having a big clampdown (forced on them by the content providers) bbc etc I have had no problems with.

Good timing, I need to sort a new one as well. Quick query - does anyone use / know if you can use any of these providers on a Raspberry Pi running Kodi? I am thinking about setting one up as a media centre option, and would like to be able to run a VPN on it as and when... any pointers gratefully received.

If you can install openvpn on it, then you can use PIA, maybe others.

Can you not just set up the VPN via PPTP/L2TP? That way you don't need to use the client.

I didn't know that was possible, thanks, I'll have to give that a try.

Interesting that during our 9,001 emails nobody from their support team mentioned that.
