Hi, can anyone recommend a pair of veggie friendly MTB shoes to use with flat pedals which have small studs on them? Thanks 🙂

Worn Again/Terra Plana make some skate-type shoes. You're not a size 7 by any chance are you? I might be able to help you if you are 🙂 Email in profile.

I've not found any five tens that are veggie as yet. I'm a size 5 BTW. I've seen some Vans but they're just canvas ones, so not very robust, especially for winter.

Get some regular vegan-friendly shoes and get them 5-10 resoled? There's a couple of companies that do that.

Blimey - I was fascinated to know what "Veggie friendly shoes" are but it's all getting a bit hostile here so I think I'll back away now 😯

I got two pairs of veggie skate shoes resoled by feet first (one pair of veggie skate shoes, and one pair of old SPD shoes). They have been spectacularly good 🙂

[img] [/img]

That's a pic of the veggie shoes just after I had them done....they have been to hell and back since then and are still in great condition after, must be 18 months now. The veggie skate shoes are absolutely fantastic and the 5:10 sole is still well attached. This is despite them being used constantly and getting regularly soaked through. Actually, as a point, they are pretty weatherproof on the whole and have kept my feet snuggly warm this year through all the awful weather....but they aren't too hot in the summer either 🙂

Wont most synthetic footwear be ok? Presuably it doesnt have to be hemp or other stereotypical veggie/vegan material, most synthetic stuff is devoid of meat isn't it?

Vegans/Veggies have no sense of humour then?

No time to laugh with all that hugging?

This is also true.

Sometimes glues and stuff can be animal sourced, but normally the suppliers are happy to provide information if you ask nicely!

I got the veggie shoes ones because they looked like they were gonna hold up to a battering rather than falling apart at the first sign of a rock. 🙂

Of course, synthetic (oil-based) materials are much more friendly to the environment than proper materials such as leather and rubber!

Sidi shoes are made from Lorica, not leather.

The question was veggie shoes not enviromental shoes highclimber.

If you are going to get all funny about things like that then I would look at what goes into the bike that you ride around on. Never mind the materials for the compopnents but the bigger carbon footprint for all the R&D tooling etc.

:S jeesh.

Yes, they can be indeed, although I would say it's six of one and half a dozen of the other.

I see an awful lot of contaminated land sites through my job, and tanneries are up there with the worst.

Of course shipping exotic goods halfway round the world, whether it be Indian/chinese leather/rubber or oil produced synthetics is never a good thing. Leather again is also pretty harsh on the environment, especially if you take into consideration the 9/10ths of an animal's bodyweight that goes up in heat whilst it's alive, and the food and water that goes into feeding/watering/transporting it.

So long term durable synthetics shouldn't just be knocked off as 'bad' until every factor has been fully considered.

Sidi make excellent Lorica boots and shoes - my old motorbike boots were Sidi and they were ace!

Not a huge amount - I think it was about £35 plus postage to have the soles put on for me, although looks like it's £40 now

i wonder if by using synthetic materials to make the uppers of your shoes, you are doing more damage to the environment than if you were to use dead cow skin?

brilliant. my other half suffers from the vegetarian sickness and this thread was ideal. quick visit to the shoe place, one pair of quirky shoes that haven't been made out of kittens later and come the end of the week i'll be aglow with the brownie points of cruelty free products. winner!

sheepie, i thank you

Sheepie - couple more links to look at for sites that are great at labelling vegan skate shoes 🙂

http://www.kateskates.co.uk/ (type vegan into the search engine and it will bring up all the vegan pairs)

http://www.rawshoe.co.uk/index.htm (raw have a very good search engine which allows you to select ‘skate’ shoes and the size you are looking for and then details all the shoes and their material specification)

HTH!

does that mean you have to make your own bacon butties then?

I couldn't be doing with that 🙂

Goog... The irony of you calling someone immature after your response to them was "prick" is superb... Thanks, I'll be chuckling at [s]you [/s]that for a while...

mrs swiss doesn't impose her dietary choices on me and would happily make me a bacon buttie if i desired one. but, as she's my dear one, and all that meatiness upsets her, i respect her bean eating habits and fend for myself.

plus she's, how can i put it, a bit handless in the kitchen

never trust a veggie to cook something they don't agree with. its like asking the pope to use contraceptive - he probably wouldn't know how to properly!

Works both ways. Most meat-eaters (aka murderers) haven't a clue about cooking for veggies.

What about Five Ten Basic Shoes? They're canvas I think. Don't know about glues and all that though.

Let's not get personal kiddiewinkies, I only want some friendly advice about suitable footwear. What we eat/wear or don't eat/wear is our own personal choice. We don't need to judge other people 🙂

WOW what a tolerant and very informative comment... Are you herbivorex's friend by any chance?
Back to the op. Most summer cycling shoes will be petrol based. Sole is usually stiff nylon, upper will be nylon mesh. Stitching is nylon too. As for the rest of the shoes, the insole will be card board. The toes/heels area will be synthetic leather. And glue is very likely to be petrol based too.

none of the 5-10 shoes are veggie/vegan i emailed them and asked. I think those shimano shoes for flat pedals with the vibram sold have synthetic uppers but don't know about the glue.
